Beautiful view, wonderful caretakers!

5 of 5
Our family of four (two kids-ages 9 & 12) had a wonderful week here, thanks to the kind caretakers, Alex & Estefany. We enjoyed two delicious dinners with them, even my picky eaters loved their cooking. Our kids attend a spanish immersion program in CA, and Alex & Estefany spent hours talking with them. It was a fantastic way for the kids to learn about the Costa Rican culture, practice their spanish and enjoy getting to know new people. They took great pride in taking care of this beautiful home, and it was our pleasure to tip them generously for all their hard work. We enjoyed exploring Uvita and the surrounding beaches and waterfalls. It's always refreshing to find beaches that are wide open and empty, Playa Ventanas was a favorite. We would head out after breakfast and spend the day out and about, returning every afternoon for dinners at home, with a few spectacular thunderstorms throughout the week. If you are looking for a unique, tranquil home this is the perfect place for you. It has everything you need for an adventurous, yet relaxing trip.

All you could want and then some....

5 of 5
Five long time friends and family just returned from a fabulous two weeks in Nicaragua. The highlight was the five days at Casa Roja and we wished we had planned for more time there! (But for those of you who plan to get out and about beyond San Juan, I strongly suggest a stay at Hotel Totoco Ecolodge in Ometepe Island). Casa Roja is gorgeous! All the reviews have said it before but I'll again share some of what I see as the highlights. It is sooo peaceful and quiet. Yes, it's a drive to town and the beaches, but you hardly want to leave the place and go anywhere else. Waking up and taking in the view - -lush landscaping, thick and green and tropical and mountainous with the Pacific off in the distance along with Costa Rica - along with a dip in the pool, and a hot cup of coffee (prepared by Luis everyday it seems), tells you that you are totally on vacation. Hanging out all day, reading and napping in hammocks in the palapa with a view, and playing with the dogs and perhaps getting a massage is complete R&R. The design of the house --with three separate structures, each decorated tastefully with collections from Fred's worldwide travels - gives you as much privacy or as much group time as you want. Luis (and his sweet family) - the cuidador and all around amazing gardener, caretaker, helper, friend - is the sweetest guy on the planet. Fred is just a phone call away and will meet any and all needs before you leave, or while you are there, with efficiency, humor and tales of Nicaraguan adventures. Indie, Jedi, Toby and puppy Luca are the four sweetest, kindest, cleanest dogs you'll ever meet! They become the best pals and each with a different personality. Evenings are a wonderful time to light up the BBQ, dance in the moon/starlight by the pool, drink some great rum, sing out loud (no one can hear you out here!), or just enjoy the perfect nightime peace and quiet and warm weather as you swing back and forth in your hammock swing. You'll sleep like a baby and be oh so glad that you found Casa Roja. (PS. I suggest a visit to Playa Coco and Ziplining is a blast!). Buen viaje and thank you Fred and Luis!

Perfect location and we felt

5 of 5
The house is beautiful and the location was very convenient. The description was very accurate but there is no way to describe the complete beauty you see when you sit on the deck or swim in the pool. There is complete flexibility. If you want to have a week on your own, the grocery store and several restaurants are within easy walking distance and the local bus is just a few steps away. However, Josue was available to arrange any day trips we wanted to take. All we needed to do was tell him what we wanted and he arranged everything. He is knowledgeable and honest and we felt well taken care of without feeling any pressure to use his services if we didn't need them. Roxanna takes good care of the house and was also very flexible. We did have one issue with keys breaking but it was more a result of the heat, humidity and aluminum material used in Costa Rica to make keys. They are "soft" but since we were given two sets of keys we were able to get into the house easily and a replacement key arrived the next day with no hassle on our part. Our three daughters loved the place and we were able to enjoy a full week of peace and happiness.
