Beautiful Mountain Retreat!

5 of 5
This modern, comfortable Casa was awonderful retreat for our time in central PR. We loved the open feeling and wonderful cross draft when all the doors and windows were open. The antique doors and windows gave a sense of what it would have been like to live on a hacienda 100 years ago. The wrap around deck offered wonderful views at all times of day and in any weather. After spending a couple of weeks on the coast we loved the cooler nighttime temps as well as watching the occasional shower and mountain top fog. Although the property is gated and very secure, we loved seeing the free range chickens, cats, dogs, and even a couple of horses enjoying the property. The yard is large and beautifully landscaped with many tropical plants and flowers. The close proximity of the river, the sound of birds during the day and coquie frogs after dark completed the peaceful environment. The kitchen, bathrooms, and all the rest of the rooms that we used were richly appointed and very user friendly. We toured all the local attractions, the petroglyphs , Cemi Museum, Hacienda San Pedro, Pito Rico distillery, as well as many scenic roads. We also loved le Jayuyana Bakery on route 144, great pastries and wonderful grilled sandwiches at very reasonable prices. Econos was our go to grocery store. We found that a lot of people speak only Spanish, but they were always very friendly and willing to help in any way they could. This was our first trip to PR, but fell in love with it, and will definitely come again! The owner was very easy to deal with and very helpful in showing us everything to do with the house and suggesting places we may want to visit.

Beautiful views!

5 of 5
My family of four-2 twenty-somethings-stayed at Villa Calabas to celebrate both kids college graduations in 2014. We all really just needed someplace quiet and relaxing by the time we arrived and Villa Calabas was perfect. It is not a fancy upscale place inside but it is clean and well maintained and has everything you need. The outdoor living areas are amazing. View is just incredible, the pool is great, the landscaping is fantastic. It is wonderfully quiet and there are plenty of places for sun-lovers and shade seekers alike. JP and Eve were very helpful and always available when we needed something. We all appreciated the welcome beers and the stop by the grocery store on the way to the house. We rented snorkel equipment one day-nice to just be able to rent as needed and easy to pick up from the office as we drove by on our way to the beach. Definitely rent a car-nothing is far away in distance but driving times will be longer than you think since roads aren't well marked and aren't always where they appear to be on the map. Just know you'll probably get briefly lost but go anyway! Friday and Saturday nights the traffic to get to the high rise resorts from the house is very heavy. Our favorite restaurant was Papiemento's. Great food, service and amazing setting. Make reservations! We also enjoyed Barefoot, Driftwood (hard to find though) and the setting and food at Pincho's-the service was not good at all but they were very busy. We weren't super impressed with Wacky Wahoo's-might have just been an off night for them-but still worth going. We also enjoyed Baby Beach (go to the little food shack for drinks-much less expensive there than the larger restaurant), Arashi Beach and Palm Beach (not nearly as crowded as we expected). The wind died in mid afternoon the week we stayed and it got a little buggy by the pool so we'd just pack the cooler and head to a beach. I definitely recommend Villa Calabas!
