My husband and I were looking for a place that was central without being touristy and crowded and the Bernal Guest Bunk was perfect! The apartment is very private and well supplied with dishes, a small fridge, toaster oven etc. We had a rental car for the duration of our stay but public transportation is close by. Cortland Av is walking distance up the hill and has a variety of restaurants: Bernal Star is awesome for supper and The Lucky Horseshoe is great if you are just looking for drinks with the locals. There was also a Mexican restaurant that was excellent. Basically, if you're looking for good food and good coffee, you've come to the right place. There are grocery stores and gift shops along Cortland as well.
Spend a day on Fisherman's Wharf: Check out Alcatraz but try and make it to the earliest tour and you may need to book your tickets in advance. The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is pretty interesting as well. We had a great lunch at The Franciscan which overlooks the bay.
Be sure to check out the Golden Gate Bridge and Stinson Beach. The beach was relatively quiet and very pretty.
The Golden Gate Park was also a great day trip. We made it to the Botanical Gardens and the Conservatory of Flowers but there are many other attractions in the park.
If you're visiting during the high season or if there is a place with limited seating/space that you're just dying to visit, book in advance.
Diane is a great host and will gladly make suggestions for places to eat and attractions to see. If you have any issues, they will be dealt with promptly. She's also great company:)
If you're coming to San Francisco, the Bernal Guest Bunk is the place to stay. We will for sure be recommending it to our friends/family!
