Delightful weekend getaway

4 of 5
We just had a relaxing weekend getaway to Clear Lake at the Mallard Cottage #1. The unit was clean and well appointed, and the grounds of the resort were inviting for our early fall stay, with secure parking. We would have liked to go kayaking but the lower water level due to the drought made it impractical. Under other conditions, the location and the private dock make activities on the water convenient and ideal. Sizewise, for two adults the cottage is fine; for four it would be doable but tight. There was a problem with the fill valve of the toilet not working properly after each flush, but we were able to get it to work by turning the water on and off from the stop valve. Still, we were told by the caretakers at the end of our stay that this has been a problem for several weeks, but hasn't yet been fixed. This is an easy fix and should be taken care of immediately. The listing says that linens are included but we were told they would be an extra fee, so we brought our own. The listing should be updated to reflect this reality.

Lovely getaway in the Lost Coast

5 of 5
We were pleasantly surprised by Bernie's round house, particularly by the beautiful ocean view. The house is very inviting, light, and comfortable. We loved having a washer and dryer (fear of poison oak from hiking) and the DVD player for late night movie watching was an added plus. In all of our interactions with Bernie, she was very accommodating and friendly. We went to Shelter Cove to take advantage of hiking in the Lost Coast without the camping, and it was an absolutely perfect experience. The Lost Coast is spectacular! We hiked in higher areas where the sun was shining during the day, and by the time we returned to Bernie's in the late afternoon the fog had cleared every day! The Black Sand Beach was also the perfect landing place for post-hiking picnics and gentle strolls. If you're thinking of going, you'll be so happy you did!

a cozy cottage with BREATHTAKING views of the Pacific Ocean

5 of 5
The pictures you see on the website don't do this property justice. In fact, I became very frustrated with my own pictures-- because I could never quite capture the the amazing views my eyes were taking in. This property is a true find if you want solitude, privacy, and ownership of the Pacific. Perched high on a bluff overlooking a rocky beach, the views from the living room are 180 degrees. The house itself (2 bedroom, 1 bathroom) is nothing terribly modern or spacious, but it didn't matter, because my wife and I never wanted to leave the main room with the big picture windows. Fortunately, there is a full size futon in front of those windows, and a gas fireplace directly to the right. Nothing compared to sleeping to the stars at night and waking up to the vastness of water in front of us. Again, don't expect a modern house. This cottage was probably built in the 50's, and the bathroom fixtures (pedestal sink and claw foot tub with curtains) are era appropriate. But it does come with expanded cable tv and HBO, a spacious, open kitchen... and memories of relaxation to last a lifetime. One word of caution: as this property is off an unpaved road, I would not recommend driving a low-suspension vehicle up to the house. The road has a few potholes and a raised center in some areas that could scrape the bottom of subcompacts and sports cars.
