We have just got back from a week in the Ben Lomond bungalow (May 15-22). We caught the end of a terrible heat wave that hit all of California (99 degrees on our first day), but then things cooled down to a lovely low-70s temperature. The house is very attractive, an old ranch house that used to be home at various times in the past to horses, chickens, goats and dogs, etc. Owl houses are going in on the property this summer. There is a firepit (which we couldn’t use during our visit because of the California fire danger) where we had drinks and hors d’oeuvres in the evening, listening to the birds. Cloudless skies at night gave us spectacular views of the heavens. There is also a fine vegetable and herb garden. The house was well equipped with high-end utilities; a pretty living room, sort of Craftsman style; and two bedrooms, two baths, and a bunk room for storing our luggage (a children’s room at other times). The amazing thing about the house was its quietude. We were on a cul-de-sac and only cars of the other owners came along the road. The area hasn’t quite emerged from the old homestead period, for there were cocks crowing, and horses in some of the corrals. The house is eight minutes from Safeway in Felton, a very easy drive. Nearby you have the Redwood Grove Park, and, just minutes from the house, the Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, with easy trails and pretty views that used to be owned by the founders of Sunset Magazine. The owners were wonderfully helpful and welcomed any calls we might make. We will certainly return next year if we can.

Wow - what a marvelous, relaxing place. It was spotlessly clean too. We didn't want to leave. There's this wonderful feeling of being away from everything, yet we were only a few minutes from stores, restaurants, etc. For people from out of the area, this would be a great base to take day trips from (if you can pry yourself away). Santa Cruz is just a few miles down the road, and you're just over the hill from Silicon Valley. San Francisco isn't all that far away either. We will definitely be back! -Mike and Karen, June 2008
