Casa Flores, Palmetto Bay Plantation

5 of 5
We just returned from a very relaxing week stay at Casa Flores located in the private community of Palmetto Bay Plantation. The drive from the airport is about 20 minutes much of it on a narrow dirt road. We had rented a minivan for 6 people. I was not sure how it would handle the dirt roads. Turned out, we had great weather and the roads were no problem although I think they could be a real problem in the rainy season. There is no place to buy groceries at the plantation so you will want to stop at the store in Coxen Hole and stock up before heading out to the Palmetto Bay. The villa was clean and comfortable. Probably better suited for 4 people. We made arrangements ahead of time to bring air mattress's for the kids to sleep on the floor. Pillows and linens were provided. Once we arrived we found a double size blowup bed in the closet but the pump was missing the hose nozzle. Since we brought our own this was not a problem. There is no air conditioning. It is a Balinese style house and The tradewinds blow in the evening creating nice airflow through the villa. There are ceiling fans throughout which also worked well. The villa was next to the main path to the beach, pool and restaurant just a few minutes walk. The Palmetto Bay Plantation property is beautiful. The beach is very quiet and spectacular. The staff maintained the beach daily by raking the seaweed and spraying for sand fleas. we were warned about sand fleas and came prepared. They did bite some of us but not others. We brought Deet as was recommended, although the fleas tended to bite in the early morning and just before the sun went down. They are not so bad if you stay off the sand. The pool and deck area are a nice place to read and relax away from the sand fleas. The kids were in the pool when they weren't swimming and snorkeling in the sea. The food at the restaurant was good although the service a bit slow. The entire staff was wonderful. Eric and Gilroy were especially nice. Erica and Matt at the Barefoot Dive shop located on site were enthusiastic, friendly and really helpful. We hiked down the beach to the nearby village of Crawfish Rock. The locals were very friendly. Miss Dolce, from the village (well known for her delicious cooking) prepared a local island meal for us in her home for a very reasonable price. She also makes the pies for the restaurant at Palmetto Bay. The coconut and key lime are wonderful. Palmetto Bay is a very family friendly place and we loved it.
