                Great Vacation

                5 of 5
We stayed at the yacht club but couldn't get a room for the entire time we wanted. Originally planned to finish our trip in the Florida Keys but decided to check Homeaway and Staniel "just in case". Boy are we glad we did, finishing up at the Beach Cottage capped a perfect vacation. We traded the hustle and bustle of the club for the peace and solitude of the cottage. Loved it! Cottage is as advertised. Beautiful location and stocked with amenities. In 5 days unless we left the property we only spotted another person once, and they were working on the house up the hill. A/c worked great, bed was great, lots of towels for bath and beach, well stocked kitchen. plenty of games, tv was great but shame on you if you watch it a lot. WiFi....meh. It worked about half the time on and off. But who cares!!!! Bikes are in good shape and more than fine for getting anywhere on the island. May want to borrow a golf cart if you're going to be buying a lot of groceries at once but one of the bikes does have a basket. We had rented a cart for the week and really didn't need it with the bikes, especially for what they charge for a cart. Really not a clean beach to speak of directly in front but go to the left maybe 50 feet and it's a good little beach. The other side of the dock is an even better one. It's on another property but I believe they're related and don't care. Definitely rent a boat at least one day. Exumas around Staniel have a lot of neat things to see by boat. Very friendly waters if you're a novice boater. If not, hire a guide but try not to let the opportunity pass. Kayaks looked to be in great shape. A might to windy during our stay unfortunately but we kayak at home so didn't feel compelled to go. For groceries check all 3 stores. When they're open is hit or miss and they may have different items in stock from one week to another. Order bread from Rhonda over in the village (yellow house up the hill.) Coconut bread is absolutely fantastic. If you're there on a saturday they have the market be sure to try the donuts. If you want to eat out you have 2 choices, Taste and Sea and the Yacht club. Either or, they're both great. A 3d place Big Dogs, is open for lunch only, unless they're open later, or closed, it's an island. 3 things that we would've liked to see. 1&2, reclining beach lounge chairs. the 3d would be a small cooler we could've packed with drinks and food to spend a day at another beach. (try Pirate Trap). no mo room

                Home away from Home

                5 of 5
Our family enjoyed the beauty and simplicity of Staniel Cay in the cottage that is "Serenity". Amazing views, lovely accommodations and relaxing. We rented a Boston Whaler and adventured neighboring islands to experience the most unusual; Carefully feeding Swimming Pig's, hanging out with the rare Iguana's, Swimming with Nurse Sharks at Compass Cay, Snorkel beautiful Coral Gardens and the famous "007" Thunderball Grotto! Amazing times, full of adventure and fun. The beautiful beach near Thunderball became my favorite get away, enjoying the natural beauty of the island......swimming and sunbathing in the peace and quiet of this lovely paradise. Marty and Coral were helpful in all ways, gracious and friendly. For the ultimate experience in the "Natural Beauty" of the Bahama's - This is it. Enjoy!

Our #1 location in the Bahamas

                5 of 5
Each year, for the past 12+ years we have gone to the Bahamas, going to a different Out-Island for a few days and then returning to our favorite, Staniel Cay, in the Exuma chain for a few days. We have not found anything to compare with Staniel Cay. To find Shell available to rent was more than we could ever hope for on this highly demanded cresent bay with white sugar, Windex-blue water, and perfect beach just steps from your door. On this secluded bay, Shell is your own personal tropical compound which is remote yet safe. When we were not cooking on the beach or in the BBQ, we took our golf cart to one of the several local restaurants to meet up with the locals we have become friends with over the years. There is so much to do in the Exumas - snorkeling, diving, fishing, shelling, eating, hiking, relaxing etc. Everything is here. Shell has all the modern conveniences of home, although you probably won't turn on the flat screen TV other than to get a weather update each morning. Since the owners are there often, the pantry is well-stocked, just in case you need a jar of spaghetti sauce before the supply boat comes in (borrow a jar, replace a jar). The locals are wonderful people. It was a joy sharing in their community party the week we were there. This is a remote island chain, to become one with nature and all it has to offer. If you are looking for Blockbuster and Dominos Pizza, this is not the place for you. If you want to visit a tiny village island atmosphere, get to Staniel Cay and stay at Shell. While there are a few places to stay on Staniel Cay, we have never found anything to rent directly on this bay other than Shell. We were there in October. We loved being in some thunderstorms for a couple of days. We sat on the screened porch and watched the waves roll in. Be sure to feed the nurse sharks, the swimming pigs, and the iguanas on the surrounding islands. You'll have several choices of boat rentals, captains for fishing and other private charter events, and golf cart rental to get around the 2-mile-long island. Shell is the perfect home away from home - not your usual rental vacation property. From the moment you pull into the sugary white sand driveway and wind yourself around the fruit and herb garden before you get to the front door, you will never want to leave. Never. We can hardly wait to return. We will someday call Staniel Cay our second home.
