We stayed at Shangri La with a full moon lighting the patio (aka dance floor). This house sits right on the beach. If you stand by balcony near the pool you can look over the railing and watch the kids build a castle in soft, clean sand or swim in the clear, calm waters of Goodman's Bay. In the morning Eagle Rays glided right by the house in pairs.
We travel with a large group (3 families) and I'm picky about the house. Shangri La was perfect for us. There is a small cottage at the front of the property with 2 bedrooms: one has 3 bunk beds and one has a full bed. That worked well for our 3 single guys in their 20's and one newly married couple. (Emily ruled the roost out there).
The main house is truly more elegant than the website pictures reveal. We sat 14 around the outside patio table for dinner. It converted beautifully into a beer pong table (I still can't believe Jane and I came in second place.) The kitchen is wonderful. I loved that fridge! Pack light because there's a washer and dryer, lots of beach towels and a little closet outside with pool toys, coolers and chairs. I don’t need to go into detail because owner Sue Linzing will provide you with lots of information. She’s great about answering emails, too.
On the street side of the house the #10 bus stops frequently. That gave us a bit of freedom to explore in pairs or small groups. We dived with Bahama Divers and they picked us up right there. 3 of the guys golfed and they loved the course. Jet skis rentals zoomed by to see if we’d like to take one for a ride. We did. We also tried paddle boarding at the near by beach. I found it a little boring and expensive. It was more fun to take out Shangri La’s comfortable two person kayak and tool around the bay looking for turtles.
Two doors down from Shangri La is a family with 2 pontoon boats. “Captain Sam” will take your group for a ride. He called his brother “Captain Ben” to help when our group needed both pontoons. I doubt these two guys are licensed “captains” but they know the area well and were hilarious. We snorkeled and stopped for lunch.
We’ve stayed at 7 different Caribbean villas in as many years and Shangri La is my favorite.
