We stayed at the Tortuga House last month (February 2015) and it was the most relaxing vacation we have ever had. You wake up to the sound of the ocean gently lapping on the beach (that’s how close the water is). Your most pressing decision is whether to have your morning coffee in the screened in porch or to move out to the gazebo and enjoy the gentle breeze. The beach was private and wonderfully secluded. There were days when we saw no one. We felt like we had the Caribbean all to ourselves! The water was a rainbow of blues and greens. From the gazebo, we could see the sun coming up in the morning and setting in the evening. It doesn’t get much better than that! The house is very well equipped and very comfortable. Everything was new and well maintained. We rented a car, which is recommended given the secluded location of the house. Once you got used to driving on the left side of the road and avoiding the potholes, it was fun to drive to town. George Town is a cute little town and we became regulars at the Market and buying our fish at the local hair solon (“clip & chips”). We took a day to take the water taxi across the bay to Stocking Island where we enjoyed hamburgers, Kalik beer at the “Chat & Chill” and played some beach volleyball. Another day, we drove to drive to Little Exuma and had lunch at Santana’s Grill, which we learned was one of Johnny Depp’s hangouts while filming Pirates of the Caribbean (the many pictures of Johnny Depp confirmed that claim). An afternoon at Tropic of Cancer Beach topped off a beautiful day. While Stocking Island was fun and the TOC beach was exquisite, we were very happy to be back at Tortuga House’s private beach after both excursions. As indicated in the write up, if you are looking for nightlife and casinos, this is not the right choice for you. But if you are looking for relaxation and a little slice of heaven on earth, Tortuga House is your place. We would love to have the opportunity to go back again!
