Beautiful home, perfect location, right on the beach. Amazing stay - relaxing AND fun!

5 of 5
Pack up your beachwear and go! Just spent 11 amazing days at the Hummingbird and are planning our next trip. Marian is the master of organization and you'll be able to find what you need. If you're like me you tend to over pack. Don't! The home has everything. Just bring your personal items, beachwear, good water shoes, sunblock, bug spray (for dusk and dawn) and you'll be good to go. Kayaks: They were a blast. We kayak at home on rivers and lakes, so the ocean experience was new to us. The water is super clear so bring your GoPro or waterproof camera. We spotted fish, stingray, jellyfish and even a reef shark over by Levy island. Fly-Fishing: Husband said he saw quite a few bonefish out front, they just weren't biting. Mhmm. Swimming: Once you are a few steps out you hit pure sand and the most amazing turquoise water. The beach isn't what I consider rocky, it's shell-y along the waters edge. You are literally walking on thousands of shells. The Beach Book even mentions Balara Bay for shelling. Picked up some amazing beach glass as well. Be sure to walk/swim/snorkel around the point to the right for loads of good finds. Speaking of The Beach Book. GET IT. We had *so* much fun finding different beaches, it was quite the adventure. Make sure you rent an SUV as cars will not make it down most of the beach "roads" we took. Wear good water shoes! Some of the paths to the beach are tricky. Twin Coves beach and the old Club Med beach were our favorites and both are within 10 minutes of the property. Most of what I consider the "pretty" beaches are near the central part of Eleuthera, so the house location is very convenient. The outdoor space is large with tons of room on the patio, sand and tiki area. Plenty of seats for reading, reclining and enjoying a drink or two. Or three. ;) Several days we never left the house. I read on the beach in what has to be the most comfortable beach chair I've ever sat in. Seriously. You'll know what I'm talking about once you get there. Basically, go. The house is nice, in a private location and quiet (as is the island). Keep in mind it's hard to get things to the islands so they take care of what they have. If you're looking for a 5-star experience then Eleuthera isn't for you. We are in our late 30's and have two teenage daughters. They were left at home for this trip but we wouldn't hesitate to bring them along next time. PS. Governors Harbour Friday Night Fish Fry: The Rum Bubbas are no joke.

Surprisingly Good Location

5 of 5
Room: The unit looked just like the pictures. The furniture is still in good shape, and for the most part everything looked brand new. The view from the rear deck is to the west, over the trees and toward the water. With the curtains open you can see this view from the living room and kitchen. From the front bedroom, you have a pleasant view toward the property grounds. The mobile hotspot for wireless worked well, but was limited if you're planning on streaming or other heavy usage. Satellite TV (PR DirecTV feed) had more movies than I would have anticipated for standard programming. Property: The grounds were well maintained, most mornings staff was on site doing landscaping work. The pool was clean, but I prefer the warmth of the ocean water. The path to the beach on the golf cart is a fun ride. The beach itself is isn't far from the well-known surfing locations, so during out stay the waves were too rough to swim, but would have been great for water sports. On a calm day there should be good snorkeling at a shipwreck not far from the beach. Location: There's a lot of activity 20 mins north or south of Buttonwood. This gives you a lot of options when planning out a day, since anything between Gregory Town and Governor's Harbor is easily reached. The convenience store about a mile north of the property stays open late on Sunday unlike most. There is also a gas and service station just inside town. My preference has typically been to stay in Governor's Harbour, but Buttonwoods spot just outside of James Cistern was very convenient and worked extremely well for us. Buttonwood is in-between a hotel and detached rental home. The unit is spacious and has the amenities of a home, but has the larger staff of a hotel that's readily available to assist when needed, and perhaps the comfort of not being alone in the middle of nowhere. The upstairs unit would offer a bit more privacy and move closer towards the detached home feeling. You could nitpick some details if you wanted, but this is Eleuthera, and that is true for the whole island. Overall, Buttonwood is a rental that's good at what it tries to be.

Beautiful and Secluded

5 of 5
My wife and I were looking for a place to get away from it all and the Desert Rose provided more than we expected. The house was very comfortable. Fully stocked with everything you need to relax and unwind. The beach was perfect for us. We were there for 5 days and saw only 3 people on the 1/2 + mile stretch of beach. The water was warm and clear, almost like being in a pool, only way better. Barbara was fantastic to work with and Kelly was outstanding with her assistance at before and during our stay. We hated to leave and stalled until the very last minute almost missing our flight back to reality. If we can we will be back. Couldn't have been better.
