It was easy for us to decide to rent Orchid Cottage after reading all the great reviews, and clearly we made the right decision. Julianna and the team from Eleuthera Vacation Rentals were so responsive and easy to work with, answering all our questions, sometimes in a matter of moments.
The house is exactly as it appears in the photos, except the bathroom which was recently renovated with a fantastic new shower and sink. When we arrived, we found the cottage to be stocked with most of the basics: linens, soaps, dish and laundry soap, simple seasonings in the pantry, and a small charcoal grill. The house is perfect for a small family, especially with kids as it is off the main road in a gated community and quite private, with lots of room to play outside. Our daughter who is 4 loved running around collecting coconuts in the well maintained and landscaped yard.
While there are many beaches on Eleuthera which we explored (Lighthouse Beach is worth the trek), our favorite day was spent on the beach just over the ridge from the cottage; perfect for sunning, swimming, snorkeling and long walks. While the house does not have a water view you are so close that you always hear the waves, which lulled us to sleep each night. An added bonus of the house is the proximity to Sky Beach Club which has a swimming pool and swim up bar you can use just down the dirt road (which is walkable). The owner, Shawna, was on the island when we were and was fantastic, helping us by offering great restaurant recommendations. She is very engaged and eager to help make sure her renters have a fantastic experience.
During our stay, everything was truly simple and easy! We live just outside of New York City so we wanted a place to really unwind, no big resort or crowded beach. Eleuthera is perfect for people/families who want to relax and who don't need a lot of stimulation or actives other than mother nature's beauty. Our days were spent exploring different beaches in the morning (many times enjoying them all to ourselves) and then swimming at the pool in the afternoon. We ate out a bit, enjoying a lovely meal at French Leave, lunch at the Beach House and Tippy's, but mostly we cooked ourselves, getting fresh fish from the docks in Governour's Harbor and grilling it at the house. We plan to come back and would recommend Orchid Cottage to anyone who wants to really unplug and enjoy the natural beauty of this somewhat untouched island.
