Paradise in the pines

5 of 5
Greenwood Cabin is located up on the hilly edge of town, just a couple of blocks from an entrance to the national forest. Our alarm clock was the sun lighting up the tops of the ponderosa pines through the bedroom window. Through the living room skylights, one can glance up and see the pines overhead. It's a peaceful setting. In late October it was still warm enough to sun ourselves on the deck in the chaise longue chairs. The owner, Dave, was very accessible by phone to answer our questions, as was his local caretaker. The Ponderosa Market in Pine met most of our needs for food and beverages. For those who travel light as we did, the cabin has an ample array of miscellaneous condiments, toiletries, tools, pots and pans. The bathroom is comfortable, with warm infrared lights and ample, prompt hot water in the shower. Our weekend guests remarked on the sweet, lived-in energy. Our suggestions for upgrades are few and minor. While the laundry in Pine is clean and convenient, replacing the out-of service combo washer/dryer in the pantry would be a welcome amenity for guests. (The dryer still works, and came in handy for wet swimsuits.) Longer-term guests would also welcome having a little more closet and drawer space cleared for them in the master bedroom. Written instructions for accessing Netflix on the large-screen TV would be nice for techno-noobs like ourselves (Dave promptly texted them to us when we got lost in the menus of the dual remotes). Having brought our own HDMI cable, we were able to use the TV as a big monitor for our laptops, taking advantage of the cabin's wireless internet service. As a final idea for making Greenwood Cabin greener, replacing the veteran 5-gallon toilet with a modern 1.6 gallon unit would be a thoughtful gesture toward water conservation in Pine. We ended up liking Pine well enough to consider buying a cabin there ourselves. Greenwood Cabin might make you feel the same way.
