Before we flew down to Phoenix I carefully read all the very glowing comments provided by condo guests from April 2012 to June 2013, and I thought surely it can't be this good. The condo, the grounds, the location, hmff, sounds too good to be true. But, in fact, it was all accurate. We arrived late at night, tired, and a bit grumpy, after all we are in our early eighties. But what a lovely surprise. The condo photographs were indeed accurate. All that was promised was real; very elegant, but welcoming. We were very happy to open the bottle of wine awaiting our arrival and toasted our good fortune.
In the days following, we explored the Portofino grounds, walked around the Lakewood Parkway , and back through the park in the middle. Tested the warm 82 degree pool, large enough to swim laps, we made very good use of that. Followed the wall around to the opening to the Mall, and delighted in all the goodies we found in Fryes Market, five minutes walk away. I was even able to pick up the morning paper while husband made breakfast. We had planned on dining out, but we never felt the urge, ate better “at home” with the help of Frye's excellent selection of food, and the very well equipped kitchen, much better than my own. It was very pleasant to wine and dine on the verandah, listening to our choice of music.
After a couple of weeks, we returned the rental car, I waved goodbye to my husband at the airport, awaited in Arrivals for my friend and we spent the following two weeks exploring Ahwatukee by bike. With the aid of the information provided in the condo, its very convenient central location and the Ahwatukee map , it was a joy to head out each morning, sometimes getting lost but always finding ourselves. The bike trails, the cactus gardens, wherever we went there was something interesting.
We had no urge to rent a car. e.g. we were able to go by bus to the the Desert Botanical Gardens. Fifteen minutes walk from the condo to the park and ride, bus #108 to Priest and Elliot (Costco and Walmart), then Bus #56, which dropped us at the park entrance. All for $3 each, all day pass.
Would I recommend this condo, a very resounding yes. Definitely five stars.
