Well-positioned mountains can mean perfect snow conditions for skiers, even as far south as North Carolina. The mountains all around Maggie Valley tower as high as nearly 7,000 feet . With cool alpine temperatures, the Smoky Mountains see fresh snow all winter and deep into March, while the valleys get a handful of snowstorms a year. The mountains average 150 inches of snow every winter from November to March , and in case nature doesn’t provide, the management of the ski hills certainly will!

Where to Ski in Maggie Valley

There are a tremendous number of Maggie Valley ski rentals near the Cataloochee Ski Area, North Carolina’s first and best ski hill. This resort has been in operation for more than 50 years, expanding to 16 runs over 20 acres of mountain.

The Cataloochee Ski Area is usually the first ski hill in the region to open each season. With their snowmaking equipment blanketing the mountain with full coverage all winter, you’re guaranteed a solid snow base and as much fresh snow as possible.

Cataloochee is suitable for all levels of skiers, from first-timers to seasoned experts. To help those just starting out, 25 percent of Cataloochee's runs are beginner level, including runs called Over Easy, Rabbit Hill, Beginners Luck, and Easy Way. If you’ve never set foot on a ski hill, Cataloochee is a great place to start, as you can rent everything you’ll need—including ski equipment, jackets and ski bibs—at The Shop at Cataloochee.

Half of the resort’s trails are intermediate, and for the ski expert in your crowd, 25 percent are black diamond. There are five lifts, including a quad, a triple and a double chairlift. The longest run at Cataloochee is just over a mile long, and the vertical drop at the mountain is just over 700 feet. All of the runs are lit, too, so you can enjoy the incredible sensory experience of night skiing on a gorgeous, winter evening.

Ski School in Maggie Valley

The Cataloochee Snow School is a member of the Professional Ski Instructors Association , and it offers a wide range of lessons, from the starting basics for new skiers to technique touch-ups for experts. There are group lessons, private lessons, children-specific programs, and Wednesday sessions for women only.

If you have never skied, Cataloochee Ski Area has a great deal, offering a free introductory ski lesson with all ski rentals from Monday to Thursday (excluding holidays).

For kids aged 4 to 12, the Cat Trackers program teaches the basics of skiing and hill safety in half-day or full-day sessions. Children’s Snow School snowboarding lessons are available for ages 8 to 12.

If you’re bringing the kids on your Maggie Valley ski vacation, try to plan some ski time on Wednesdays, the day Cataloochee offers an excellent Family Day special giving all children under 17 free lift tickets when they’re accompanied by an adult who buys a full-day ski-lift ticket.

Go Tubing for a Fun Alternative

When you want to do something fun but need a change from skiing, check out Tube World, the nearby snow tube park. It's close to most Maggie Valley ski rentals and just four miles from Cataloochee. It’s suitable for all ages, and they use the same kind of snowmaking equipment as the ski resort. You won't even have to walk up the hill, because they have carpet lifts to take you right to the top of the runs. There is a 42-inch minimum height requirement, but for the littler children they have the Wee Bowl Snowplay Area , complete with smaller kiddie tubes perfect for the wee ones.
