Where to Golf in September
the Spotswood Course. The Gold Course is 6,817 yards, which is long for a par 71. It is situated in a beautiful park of mature deciduous and evergreen trees, with a number of wide open fairways coupled with some really tricky holes. The par-72 Green Course is longer at 7,120 yards, and it is a bit more forgiving than the championship Gold Course.
September is a good time to golf in Williamsburg because early in the month you can attend the LPGA Kingsmill Championship at the Kingsmill Resort , watch the pros tackle a great course, and then pack your bag and do a little pro-like golfing at Golden Horseshoe.
There are sets of tees to match anyone’s level of play. Although it's in the mountains, the slopes are gentle, the fairways reasonably forgiving and the greens have a nicely challenging undulation to keep you on your toes. Take your time on this course, as it sometimes will feel like your own private place.
Lake Michigan require strategic play.
One of the best holes is the third. It will frustrate all but the best (or luckiest) golfers, as the green drops off to the lake on one side and is flanked by bunkers and dunes on the other side. The other 18-hole course at Whistling Straits, the Irish Course , is equally challenging. It is ranked # 35 in Golf Digest's list of America's Best Public Golf Courses.
Sakonnet Sound and the Atlantic Ocean are a bonus.
As a break from golfing in mid-September, you can do something completely different. Attend the three-day annual Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival to give your taste buds a workout. Meet and learn from celebrity chefs as you try the products of more than 100 of the world's finest vintners. Also, check out the fabulous local mansions named Rosecliff , the Elms , and Marble House .
Pacific Dunes, designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2001, is a course laid out on coastal land and dunes that appear to be created by Mother Nature. The ocean wind makes approach shots difficult and the rippling fairways are a delight to the eye, though not the easiest to manage on your way to the green. The par 71 course with a maximum length of 6,633 yards is not too long, but don't be deceived. There are challenges here not just in dealing with the wind but also in keeping away from the sand.
There are three other courses at this resort, and they all are remarkably well integrated into the coastal site. Bandon Dunes is on a high ocean bluff, Bandon Trails begins on a massive dune and takes the golfer into the coastal forest, and Old MacDonald Golf Links is a true seaside-links course.
Now that you know where to golf in September, make sure to book your golf vacation rental so you have close access to the course, and save money, too.
