Best Skiing in January

Some incredible skiing happens all over the world in January. It's the best part of winter, and not just because it's one of the less-traveled months of the year. With ski-out, ski-in vacation rentals, you can rule these mountains because the crowds aren't around.

Les Gets, France

If you've never skied a day in your life, a lot of the best skiing in January happens in Les Gets. This is one of the best places to get some instruction when there aren't many people around, so when the busy times happen you can impress everyone on the slopes.

france skiingBanff, Canada

Banff National Park is located in the Canadian Rockies, and it just doesn't get any more scenic or rustic than this. Once you step out of your rental, you'll be surrounded in natural beauty, with elk and moose strolling around like they own the place, and all the skiing you can take.

Bansko, Bulgaria

This town is not just great for serious ski action. After a long, grueling day on the slopes, you can treat your aching muscles to a professional massage in the area. While a bit clinical in their no-nonsense approach, skipping the luxury for a holistic experience that's good for your health is worth the time.

Les Deux Alpes, France

With over 200 kilometers of ski slopes, this is a great place to get some time with the hills during the off-peak times of January. However, if you also want to have some good times, check out the local bar scene. The Crowded House is a great place for serious atmosphere, and O'Brians is a great Irish bar to relax after you've been on the slopes all day.

Saas Fee, Switzerland

This town boasts more than just the best skiing in January in its area. You can also be drenched in grape skins during a chardonnay massage, which is just the thing after a long day taking in the wonder of the local blue glaciers.

Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

This area has a lot of range for every skill level. If you just want a fun, easy time, try Campo Carlo Magno.  If you're up to a serious challenge, try the World Cup run. There are plenty of slopes in between, too.

Lapland, Finland

The days are short here, but the skiing is great. The slopes are downright deserted in January, since they're never too crowded anyway. If the skiing gets to be too much for you, you can always just take a reindeer safari. This is also a very family-friendly area where it's easy to find a ski school for your children.

Winter Park, Colorado

The trails in Winter Park are very well groomed. Considering there are over 125 kilometers of them, you'll have a lot to do the entire time you're in town. The snowfalls are also generally very good, with a thick powder coating the area in January.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

Greyhounds and horses race in this area during February, but the best skiing in January is an even better reason to come around. With so much sun and a reputation for luxury that causes many celebrities to ski here, Engadine Valley is the kind of place where running into a famous person on the slopes is actually very possible, especially in a less-crowded time like January.

Les Arcs, France

The longest drop on a European ski slope is 2,000 meters, and it's right here in Les Arcs. In addition to that, there are over 420 kilometers of excellent challenges for both your skill level and your endurance. How many can you beat?
