Skiing is fun all year round, but a lot of people think they have to take a few months of the year off. After all, both the northern and southern hemispheres have their own unique seasons, and neither is in high winter during April. So what are you going to do when you want to go skiing and it's the off season? Fortunately, you have a lot of options available. All you really need is altitude and attitude, and the best skiing in April will follow.
The ski terrain is absolutely massive on Mammoth Mountain. You can pop out of your vacation rental to ski without worrying about bumping into trees or other skiers. Gold Hill, Hemlock Ridge and Lincoln Mountain are excellent points nearby, and in some places the slopes are more than six miles wide.
This is the highest elevation of skiing in the Austrian Alps, and offers some of the best skiing in April. In addition to the almost year-round skiing opportunities found in Oetztal, the surrounding mountains keep the weather from getting too severe. Even when there's no snow in the lower points, the glacier provides plenty of skiing. The two main resorts are Obergurgl and Solden, and each has its own local vibe.
In 1865 the first person to reach the mountain's top lost four people doing so. People have braved skiing here since 1933. Zermatt has only one car, and it's used by the town doctor.
Charmonix and its Grand Montet are extremely famous. Of course, Mont Blanc is renowned for a lot of things, including a long walk from your vacation rental into town and for having some seriously erratic weather. Be prepared for crowded shuttlebuses that arrive whenever they feel like it. But if you can endure the inconveniences, the skiing is superb if you're ready to tackle the expert-level slopes.
This is the home of four Olympic gold medalists who brought home nine total medals. There are 90 ski lifts in this 11th-century town, and one with a capacity of 3,000 skiers per hour actually goes underground and operates in all weather conditions.
The highest-elevated of any European resort, Val Thorens is over 7,000 feet high and is designed for highly active people. Point de la Masse stands over 2,800 meters high, and it's the first stop of some of the best skiing in April.
Whistler's upper slopes can sometimes let great skiing continue past April, sometimes until Memorial Day. Because the area is so open, skiing here has a lot of sunshine. If you want to build your skills this is a great area because the slush on Whistler's slopes gets deep.
Copper Mountain is actually "organized" in a sense, with an even arrangement of terrain for every skill level that gets progressively more difficult as you move from one side of the mountain to the other.
Lake Tahoe is 6,200 feet high, but that's just the scenery. Combine the sapphire hue of the water with about 300 days per year of blue skies, and it's a great backdrop for skiing in April.
Mt. Bachelor is interesting because high winds tend to force the mountain closed during the winter time, sometimes for as much as 40 percent of the winter season. Bachelor is also an active volcano, and watching steam rise from the vents can be an interesting experience while you ski or out the window of your vacation rental.
