Austin's Bi-annual Festival on 6th Street
The Pecan Street FestivalWhere: Austin Texas
When: May 7-8, 2011
It's another festival brought to you by Austin, Texas the city that likes to "keep it weird" - but the best part about the Pecan Street Festival is that it's free. Another good thing about the Pecan Street Festival is that it also takes place in the Fall, so if you miss the event in May you'll get another chance. Formally called the Old Pecan Street Spring and Fall Arts Festival, the family-friendly event takes place over 24 blocks along Austin's infamous 6th Street. Fun local fact: 6th Street used to be called Pecan Street which is where the bi-annual festival got its name.Springtime in Austin is one of the most beautiful times of the year, when the Texas bluebonnets begin blooming and the Texas heat hasn’t yet reached astronomical heights. The Pecan Street Fest offers Austin residents and tourists a chance to chill outdoors before the raging summer sun busts through. Bring your kids, your dogs, and your other pets (snakes, anyone?) and plan to spend the weekend people-watching and crafts-perusing from Texas' capital city.
You'll be able to get a taste of our fair city at one of the local food vendors that man the events, several of them feature food from the eclectic food trailer scene that Austin has become known for. Try a turkey leg, a hot dog, a taco or a cake ball - all easily portable so you can grab a bite while strolling down Austin's Sixth Street. And since it’s Austin, the only blue spot in the state of Texas, you can be sure vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free eats will be offered for those health conscious members of your groups. Be on the lookout for Austin vendors like Torchy’s Tacos and the Best Wurst.
For those who don’t keep their finger on the pulse of the music scene, the ATX is known as the live music capital of the world, and as such, must live up to its name. Catch live local music acts at the Pecan Street Fest from Texas Red Dirt rock bands, to blues, to blue grass. Support the local artists and buy a CD or find out where they’re playing later that night.
Kids will have a ball at the Pecan Street Festival so whatever you've heard about the crazy antics that take place on 6th, just know that 6th Street is G-rated during the day, so your little ones are in good hands. They'll get a kick out of the juggling acts, fire dancers, carnival rides and comedians - perfect for the under-twelve set in your group or just those kids at heart.
