2013 Sugar Bowl Event Details

Sugar Bowl

January 2, 2013
New Orleans, LA

Held annually on New Year's weekend, the Sugar Bowl is the second oldest college bowl game in the history of the NCAA. The first ever Sugar Bowl game was held on January 1, 1935. In 2009, the Sugar Bowl celebrated its 75th anniversary.

The Sugar Bowl has previously hosted the BCS Championship game, but new rules require the BCS Championship game and the Sugar Bowl games to be two stand-alone events although it is still a BCS Bowl.

Every year the Sugar Bowl is held at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, except in 2006 when it was held at Georgia Dome due to Hurricane Katrina.

Getting Tickets to the Game

Football fans planning to attend this great college bowl game can get tickets one of three ways:

  • Ticketmaster or Superdome Ticket Office - Tickets are released to the general public sometime in September.
  • Ticket Re-Sellers – Such as StubHub or TicketCity will certainly have plenty of seats available at a premium price
  • Colleges Playing - Every year 17,500 tickets are reserved for the two teams that will play in the bowl game. Colleges can give the tickets to students, alumni, or corporate sponsors.

What Teams Play in the Sugar Bowl?

The Sugar Bowl is host to the SEC or Southeastern Conference Champion and the BCS At-Large team. In the event that the SEC Champion team goes to the BCS Conference Championship, the Sugar Bowl can choose one random BCS At-Large team to play in the game.
College football fans will not know until sometime in November what teams are playing in the Sugar Bowl, because it's determined by BCS ranking and conference championship games throughout the football season.

In the past, some Southeastern Conference teams have made more Sugar Bowl appearances than others. Alabama and LSU have made 13 bowl appearances, Georgia made nine, and both Florida and Ole Miss made eight.

There is nothing like the atmosphere of attending a college bowl game, but after the game it's time to kick back and unwind in the comfort of a New Orleans vacation rental. Whether you are celebrating your team's victory or agonizing over their defeat, vacation rentals are spacious, private lodging choices perfect for football fans who want to relax or bring the party home after a thrilling bowl game.
