Known around the world as one of the most renowned New Year's celebrations, the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration attracts approximately one million people to New York City
and nearly one billion enjoy the show on their home televisions every year. The celebration lasts for several hours, featuring a variety of performers and the party concludes with the world-renowned ball drop.
The Ball Drop
Watching the famous ball drop is a tradition in millions of households across the globe as a countdown to the New Year. Suspended 400 ft. above the city year round, the descent of the giant globe marks the end of the year and the beginning of a new. Periodically, the shape, size, and design of the ball changes, but the one that has been hanging in Times Square since 2008 measures 12 ft. in diameter and weighs 11,875 lbs. Since 1907 the ball has become a symbol of New Year's celebrations and contributes to the countdown, arriving at the ground at the moment one year ends and another begins.
This Year's Celebration
Taking place on December 31, 2011
, rain or shine, the celebration will begin at 7 p.m. EST and end around 3 a.m. on January 1, 2012. The Times Square New Year's Eve event will, of course, be held in Times Square in New York City, located at the junction of Broadway and 7th Avenue. This year you will have the opportunity to watch Lady Gaga
perform, along with many other celebrity artists who have yet to be determined.
Attending the Event
This event is free to the public but space fills up fast, so you will want to arrive several hours early and remember to wear appropriate clothing. Many people begin arriving late in the afternoon, but Times Square is usually full before 6 p.m. After that you will be directed to nearby areas where viewing is difficult, so it is highly recommended you show up early. Avoid arriving in your own car, as limited parking is available, but use public transportation instead. For an affordable and comfortable stay during your trip to the city, book a Manhattan vacation rental
nearby Times Square or public transit.
