Times Square New Years Eve
Known around the world as one of the most renowned New Year's celebrations, the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration attracts approximately one million people to New York City and nearly one billion enjoy the show on their home televisions every year. The celebration lasts for several hours, featuring a variety of performers and the party concludes with the world-renowned ball drop.
The Ball DropWatching the famous ball drop is a tradition in millions of households across the globe as a countdown to the New Year. Suspended 400 ft. above the city year round, the descent of the giant globe marks the end of the year and the beginning of a new. Periodically, the shape, size, and design of the ball changes, but the one that has been hanging in Times Square since 2008 measures 12 ft. in diameter and weighs 11,875 lbs. Since 1907 the ball has become a symbol of New Year's celebrations and contributes to the countdown, arriving at the ground at the moment one year ends and another begins.
