Would you like to include more art in your travels? If so, there are many exhibitions and events across the country that can inspire a trip. One city where there is always a new and appealing exhibition is
New York City. Yet beyond the museums there are also exhibitions that draw travelers from across the country. One example is SOFA NYC,
the International Exhibition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art . This exhibit is being held at the Park Avenue Armory, and will feature art from emerging and established artists.
The 2012 Exhibition
In 2012, SOFA NYC will be held from
April 20 through April 23 . The year 2012 marks the 14th consecutive year of this international art exhibition that is designed to bring together the worlds of design, decorative, and fine arts. The event will be held at
the Park Avenue Armory , a building that is located on Park Avenue at 67th Street. There is also handicap access located on Lexington Avenue. One-day admission costs $25 and four-day admission costs $40. Hours for the exhibit vary each day. On Thursday opening hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Beyond the Exhibition
In addition to the regular exhibition, there are a few events and programs that complete SOFA NYC. There is an opening night preview gala that is on Wednesday night, the night before the exhibit opens to the general public. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the preview gala is open by invitation only. This VIP event allows early access to a hotly anticipated exhibit. Starting at 7 p.m. doors are open to the public for the public preview gala, but tickets cost $100.
Beyond the gala, SOFA NYC is complete with a lecture series. Each year a variety of lectures are delivered on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the exhibition in
the Tiffany Room of the Park Avenue Armory. These lectures seek to help people discover the culture of contemporary arts and design, and feature conversations with a variety of important people including curators, collectors, architects, and art market journalists.
SOFA NYC Catalog
Each year a catalog accompanies the SOFA exhibition in New York. This catalog contains a variety of gallery information, essays, and a list of artists along with color images of artwork. The catalog is included with the price of admission or can be purchased separately for $15. Art enthusiasts that are looking for back issues of the catalog can purchase them online on the SOFA website.
Exhibit Details
Many art enthusiasts are curious about the details of the SOFA NYC exhibit.
The SOFA Cafe offers refreshments throughout the four days of the exhibition, including spirits, sandwiches, and light dinner options. Reaching the exhibit is easy by public transport; simply take the 6 train to 68th Street/Hunter College. In addition to the regularly scheduled programs, there are also some last-minute events that are added to the program in March. If you're on the fence about attending, check out the list of book signings, in-booth talks, and more that is released in March.
