Brooklyn's Ten Day Event to Sample its Great Eateries
New York City is home to one of the most diverse populations in America, which means it is one of the most exciting cities in the world for food lovers. The choices are so varied they’re almost intimidating—Italian, Chinese, French, Mediterranean, Lebanese, Ethiopian, Japanese, Thai, Jewish deli, soul food, vegetarian, vegan…the list goes on forever. New Yorkers may take this cornucopia of choices for granted, but visitors to the Big Apple need to know the best time to take advantage of its array of gastronomic possibilities—and where to go.
The answers to those two questions are “in the springtime,” and “Brooklyn.” Every spring, usually in March, Brooklyn gets serious about food and puts on its Dine in Brooklyn event (not to be confused with New York Restaurant Week, which happens in the summertime and covers all five boroughs). Choose a vacation rental in Brooklyn
and hit the local eateries nearby.
About Dine in Brooklyn
Dine in Brooklyn is the borough’s way to draw attention to the great food for which it is famous. Hundreds of small, family-owned restaurants operate in Brooklyn, and during this ten-day event
over 200 of them offer patrons the opportunity to enjoy a fixed-price, three-course dinner for only $25! A three-course lunch can be had for a mere $20 (not including tax, tip or alcoholic drinks). Since the event goes on for ten days, there’s enough time to squeeze in 20 fabulous meals (or more, if you can eat more than two big meals a day).
What to Do—First Steps
First, if you’re a traveler visiting Brooklyn, you’ll need to take care of travel arrangements and lodging. Of New York City’s two major airports, JFK is closer to Brooklyn. As for lodging, you may find that hotels are all booked up for Dine in Brooklyn—hotel rooms in New York can be scarce at any time of year, really—so your best bet may be to look for a Brooklyn vacation rental apartment
What to Do—Next Steps
While most restaurant owners are very conscientious about cleanliness, and while the NYC health department takes great pains to ensure the safety of your dining experience, please bear in mind that there are thousands of restaurants in New York City, and the Health Department cannot be everywhere at once. It is therefore wise to check the Health Department grade of any restaurant before eating there.
There is no centralized system for making Dine in Brooklyn reservations, so you’ll have to make your reservations by phone, calling each restaurant where you wish to dine. Don’t try to make reservations online, as you will need to specify when making the reservation that you want the fixed-price Dine in special. Some restaurants will also offer brunch specials, and a few will even offer the $25 dinner special for two people rather than per meal. It never hurts to ask.
