Coney Island, a lovely beach and boardwalk in southern Brooklyn, first earned its reputation as a historic amusement park with some interesting shows. Beyond the rides and house of mirrors, Coney Island was also home to freak shows. While these productions are long gone, the fun spirit of them has remained. Travelers can see the quirky side of Coney Island each summer during the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. This one-day festival held every June allows people to dress up in their favorite mermaid or mer-man costume and take to the boardwalk in Coney Island.
The 2012 Parade
In 2012, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade will take place on Saturday, June 23 at 2 p.m
. This parade full of floats, antique cars, and every possible imaginative mermaid costume gets its start each year at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue
. The parade moves east to West 10th Street and then turns south for the boardwalk. The parade finishes up at West 15th Street
. If you aren't brave enough to don a costume and hop into the parade, there are many people who come as spectators just to be a part of the festivities.
In 2012, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade will reach its 30th anniversary
. This festival celebrates the beginning of summer with an homage to the sun, sand, and surf. Over the years the parade has earned a reputation as an incredible form of artistic self-expression as participants dress up in handmade costumes of mermaids, neptunes, a variety of sea creatures, and even the occasional lighthouse. Each year, in addition to the parade, there is a celebrity King Neptune and Queen Mermaid that preside over the festivities. In 2011, Adam Richman
from the Travel Channel's Man vs. Food was the king and television personality Cat Greenleaf
was the queen.
