There are many appealing reasons to travel to Vermont, from the excellent skiing in winter to sampling their famous cheeses and local maple syrup. One additional reason to plan a trip is the Vermont Brewers Festival, an annual event that takes place every July. This event has grown each and every year, and 2012 will mark the festival's 20th anniversary. This two-day festival is a perfect excuse to plan a summer trip to Burlington, Vermont
. Combine the brewers festival with some hiking or mountain biking and you will have one well-rounded vacation.
The 2012 Festival
In 2012, the Vermont Brewers Festival is scheduled for July 20 and 21
. The festival is open for different sessions, including Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday afternoon from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. This festival attracts some of the most beloved brewers from Vermont and beyond, including Harpoon Brewery
, the Alchemist
, Magic Hat Brewing Company
, and Switchback Brewing Company
. In addition to sampling craft beers, there will also be a number of food options including barbecue, waffles, empanadas, ice cream, and more. The schedule include two days of the Beer & Cheese Pairing
and Beer & Chocolate Pairing
, as well as Barrel Aging
If you love craft beers and want to support local breweries, then the Vermont Brewers Festival is for you. Tickets are available on the official Vermont Brewers Festival website, and don't wait to get yours, as the 2011 festival sold out. In 2011, tickets cost $30 each and included admission to one four-hour tasting session and 15 beer tickets. It is possible to buy tickets to more than one tasting session if you're interested in trying as many beers and talking to as many brewers as possible. This festival takes place on the shores of Lake Champlain
, providing a perfect background for a weekend of tasting delicious beer samples.
Meet the Brewer Tent
In addition to tastings, there are other events that make the Vermont Brewers Festival special. In 2011, there were several Meet the Brewer events
that also included pairing beer and different types of food. A couple examples of very popular events include the cheese and beer pairings and chocolate and beer pairings. Other great events for those people that are interested in delving deeper into how beer is made include the lager brewing event or the sustainable brewing in rural Vermont event. These activities not only give people a chance to sample items, but also the opportunity to meet the brewers.
One of the best ways to find out if this festival is for you is to take a look at the official festival website. It is packed with photographs and videos from previous festivals including details on events and activities to let you know what you can expect from this type of event. People that are interested in getting even more involved might want to volunteer their time and services to the festival. Each year it takes 150 volunteers to make this festival a reality, and many of them are just beer enthusiasts that want to help. Getting involved might help you discover what breweries you would want to visit during future trips to Vermont.
