The 2012 Festival
In 2012, the Newport Jazz Festival will take place from August 3 through August 5
. The event kicks off on Friday night with an 8 p.m. performance. All day entertainment takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Performers vary every year, but examples of musicians that took to the stage in 2011 include the New Black Eagle Jazz Band, the Joey DeFrancesco Trio, and the Ravi Coltrane Quartet. Performances are spread throughout three stages: the Fort Stage, the Quad Stage, and the Harbor Stage.
Before you leave home there are two important things to plan: finding the perfect vacation rental
and buying your tickets. Newport Jazz Festival rentals are the way to go, as far as accommodations go. There are several different ticket types that are available for different prices. Tickets can be purchased in advance online on the official festival website. Tickets vary in cost between $70 - $100 for adults and $15 for children and costs vary each year. Children under the age of 2 are allowed to enter for free. The best way to purchase tickets is directly from the festival website. While tickets will be available on other websites, the cost will often be higher and hidden fees are likely involved.
In addition to all the fantastic performances, another highly anticipated event of the Newport Jazz Festival is the annual gala
. In 2011, the gala was hosted by Bill Cosby and was held at beautiful Rosecliff. The gala is always scheduled in the week leading up to the festival and features many of the top festival performers. This event celebrates not only the kick off the annual festival, but also the non-profit organization, the Newport Festivals Foundation
. Keep an eye on the festival website or sign up to receive email alerts about the festival for the latest news on the gala and festival performers.
The Newport Jazz Festival is interesting not only for the performers that take the stage each year but for the history of the event as well. This festival has been growing and changing since it was founded in 1954. This was the first jazz festival in the country, and all the legends of jazz have taken the stage here, from Louis Armstrong to Ella Fitzgerald to Miles Davis. Before attending the festival, it can be fun to browse the lists of performers from over the years. These lists also provide music fans that are new to jazz a great reference point for building a collection of jazz records.
First time visitors might have some questions about festival details. There is parking available onsite, for a cost of $15 a day. Alternative transportation methods are available, including utilizing the water shuttle, taking the bus, or riding a bike. No camping is available at the site, but guests are allowed to bring in coolers, refreshments, picnic blankets, and chairs. However, no glass containers, alcohol, or pets can be brought into the festival. The Newport Jazz Festival takes place at Fort Adams State Park
and there are many vendors and information stations set up here during the weekend. Newport Jazz Festival rentals will get you easy access to all the fun.
