Things to Do in Narragansett

Beaches might be the first draw to Narragansett, but there are many more things to do here to fill your vacation days. Beyond the pleasures of sunbathing and swimming, you can also spend time in Narragansett sport fishing, golfing, enjoying children’s activities, and much more. Keep reading for an overview of the great activities you can try during your next Narragansett vacation.

Fishing

While you might not want to tear yourself away from the beauty of the four local beaches in Narragansett, fishing might just lure you onto the water. Offshore sport fishing is a very popular activity here.  If you didn’t bring fishing equipment you can easily hire a charter or join a fishing tour to try it yourself. Independent fishing with a rented fishing rod is also an option, with the rocks at Galilee being a favorite local spot.

River Boat Cruises

Travelers looking for a more leisurely way to climb aboard a boat should check out local river boat cruises. One of the best things to do in Narragansett is to sign up for a tour on the Southland Riverboat where you can choose between options including harbor tours, sunset cruises, or even fall foliage cruises. These tours can be romantic or a fun excursion for the whole family. During the summer these popular tours can book out quickly, so be sure to make your reservations in advance.

Surfing

One of Rhode Island’s best kept secrets is local surfing. Many people don’t associate the East Coast with great surfing, but you will find smooth waves at the Narragansett Pier Beach . Whether you’re a surfing expert and want to bring your own board or are looking for a first lesson, surfing can be a memorable part of your Rhode Island getaway.

Kayaking

Kayaking is another popular pastime and great way to get your exercise in while staying in Narragansett.  If you’ve never given it a try before, the paddling does require a certain amount of upper body strength and stamina. Kayaking gives you the chance to check out another perspective of the scenic coastline that few see.

Golf

While tiny Rhode Island might not be world famous for golf, this state is home to some challenging courses. After relaxing for a day or two on the beach, you might be looking for another land-based opportunity. In Narragansett, you can work on your swing at the challenging 9 hole Pinecrest Golf Course or at the par 3 Rose Hill Golf Club .

State Parks

The beach is an easy source of outdoor fun for the kids and adults alike. After a couple days building sand castles and splashing in the surf though, you might be looking for another choice for outdoor fun. If so, it’s time to check out the Fishermen’s Memorial State Park . Here you will find tennis courts and a playground that will provide hours of entertainment.  Camping is also available if you feel like roughing it.

Local Attractions

If you’re traveling with kids, you might be concerned about having enough activities for your family to do. Don’t worry, Narragansett’s local attractions will provide plenty of entertainment for the kids, including an IMAX theater, a reptile zoo called Regal Reptiles , the Providence Children’s Museum and the Mystic Aquarium . There are also some excellent local attractions just for adults, including the Newport Vineyards or the RISD Museum . Rainy day or not, these local attractions are good reason to spend a day or two away from the beach on your next Narragansett vacation.
