Las Vegas Vacations

when to visit, what to expect and more info for las vegas vacations
There is no more lively or exciting vacation destination than Las Vegas. In addition to casinos galore, the city is home to incredible live music, comedy and dance performances, world-class dining and abundant shopping, as well as some great museums and historical sites.

When to Visit

Most people spend the majority of their Las Vegas vacation indoors, so the season in which you travel won’t affect most of your activities. If you plan to take advantage of some of the outdoor attractions, however, such as the Neon Museum on Front Street or a walking tour of historic Las Vegas, you may wish to plan a trip during the warmer months of the year.

Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather, with average highs in the 70- to 80-degree range and lows between 50 and 65. Summer can get very hot, with high daytime temperatures averaging above 100 degrees. Winter cools down to about 50 degrees in the day, and temperatures dip into the 30s and 40s at night.

Vegas is a popular vacation destination year-round, but any period around a holiday brings a high volume of visitors. If you’re looking for a less busy time, you’ll want to avoid the holidays. Vegas is also a major convention city, hosting numerous national and regional events throughout the year, so review the convention schedule as well.

What to Expect

Vegas is a busy city, day and night. You should expect to find the heaviest crowds during conventions and around any holiday, though Christmas, New Year’s and Independence Day are by far the most popular times to visit Vegas.

The best-known images of Las Vegas in the movies and on TV are those of the Strip, a seven-mile stretch which runs through the center of town, where a lot of the action occurs. Many other areas of the city are worthy of a visit, however, including Chinatown and the historic and contemporary attractions on Freemont Street.

You’ll most likely spend some time in the casinos. While gambling is definitely on the agenda, you’ll have a blast people-watching as well. The crowds at the casinos and on the streets of Las Vegas are just as entertaining as any live performance you may see while in town.

Musical performances, dance extravaganzas, live comedy and magic shows are all popular here. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic R&B, country or pop music performance, Vegas has it. There are no limits to the entertainment options! Whether it’s a rambunctious burlesque, relaxing dinner theater or world-renowned show like Cirque du Soleil, you’ll have a grand time.

Dining in Las Vegas
offers the same limitless variety. No matter what style or cuisine you prefer, Vegas has a range of restaurants to suit your tastes. The all-you-can-eat buffets that first became popular in 1940s Vegas can still be found in abundance here. Gourmet restaurants have popped up all around town in more recent years, many featuring the signature cuisine of famous chefs.

No vacation is complete without a bit of shopping, and Vegas offers hundreds of retail locations on and off the Strip. High-end stores on the Strip are often housed in the big hotels. Off-Strip shopping includes premium outlet malls, boutiques and specialty shops.

gaming in vegas casinosMust Bring

Vegas is a glitzy place that demands a little more from your vacation wardrobe. While your standard jeans and t-shirts will work for many activities, you’ll no doubt be spending some nights on the town or dining in a few upscale restaurants. Make sure you pack your eveningwear and a few nicer outfits for taking in a show or gaining admittance to a top nightclub.

Bring your camera for capturing a few keepsake photos. Pack some good, comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll be touring some areas of the city on foot. And of course, you’ll need a bit of gambling money. While Vegas has so much more to offer than just the casinos, no trip to Sin City is complete without at least a bit of time at the blackjack table or slots.

Getting There

If you’re driving to town or traveling by bus, the main routes into the city are I-15 from the West and I-70 from the East. Amtrak offers rail service to Vegas, but most visitors fly into McCarran International Airport, a few miles south of the city. From there, you can catch a shuttle, rent a car or take a cab.
