It might not snow much in Phoenix during the holidays, but that doesn't mean you cannot enjoy the festivities. Your family can still experience the city light celebrations, shopping and wonderful holiday music. If you are around the Phoenix area in the Holiday season try any one of these family-oriented events.
Thanksgiving in Phoenix
There are a slew of Phoenix holiday events your family can participate in during the Thanksgiving season. Check out these fun and festive highlights:
Anthem Turkey Trot – Now in its 11th year, this 5k and 10k race takes place on November 28, 2013 at 8:30 a.m starting at the Anthem Community Center. Participants pay $25 to run the mostly flat terrain and will catch views of both Gavilan Peak and Daisy Mountain.
Festival at the Farm – There are many great wineries in Arizona and Festival at the Farm is one of the most famous wine-tasting events during the holidays. Admission prices range from $60 to $75 with about 18 different wines to sample. The event is held every year around the Thanksgiving holiday.
Tolmachoff Farms – The pumpkin days and fall maze event at Tolmachoff Farms runs from October 1 to November 10. Hours are available on the website and admission is $9 and includes access to train rides, corn mazes, a petting zoo and more.
Arizona Celebration of Lights: Join the rest of the city on a mile-long drive where seven million colorful lights illuminate the city for the first time during the holiday season. Head to Santa’s Village for refreshments, train rides and a chance to have your picture taken with St. Nick. Make sure to arrive early, as the first 15,000 cars get to take home a special holiday gift bag. The cost is $15 per vehicle.
Snow What Fun: If you want to experience snow during the holidays in Phoenix, take your son or daughter to the Desert Ridge Marketplace for an 8-minute winter wonder. The snow falls at 7 and 8 p.m. everyday. The artificial snowflakes are made of 90 percent water and eco-friendly. They dissolve upon contact, just like real snow!
Las Noches de las Luminarias: Enjoy a night at The Desert Botanical Garden for an enchanting experience. In the evening, 8,000 candles light up the entire garden while visitors are free to roam as they please. A mariachi band, handbell choir and Native American flute players provide the musical stylings for the night. Hot chocolate and apple cider are available at the garden's cafe.
Jazz Holiday Celebration: Every year the Musical Instrument Museum features a special jazz evening with local valley musicians. The best jazz players arrive to dazzle audiences with their style, charisma and talent. The set list includes famous holiday songs from around the globe.
Phoestivus Market: If you want to get some last-minute shopping done as you explore Phoenix during the holidays, head to the open-air Phoestivus Market. Food trucks, live entertainment and 70 local vendors crowd the streets and showcase their best-selling products.
Zoolights: Zoolights at the Phoenix Zoo is truly a magical experience. The entire family will enjoy an evening walking about the property with 3.5 million lights adorned on various sculptures. Camel rides, a carousel and horse-drawn carriages are also available. Admission ranges from $8 to $15 and lights start at 6:00 p.m.
The Fiesta of Light Electric Light Parade celebrates its 27th year in 2013, and you won’t want to miss it. The parade travels down Central Avenue on December 7 and this year’s theme is “Wild West Holiday Roundup” In past years there have been over 200,000 attendees lining the parade route. The parade consists of floats, marching bands, and other local groups and every participant is fully decked out in lights.
Regardless of the events you take part in, bringing the family together for a holiday stay in Phoenix can be fun for everyone and maybe even start a new family tradition.
