Arizona Renaissance Festival
History, Food and Fun in Phoenix - February-April 2012
Damsels in distress, knights to the rescue, magic, fairies and whimsy – no, it’s not the latest fantasy novel craze, but a leap backward in time to days of old at the Arizona Renaissance Festival. Held annually on Saturdays and Sundays (and Presidents’ Day) from February to April, you’ll find all the wiles of the historic renaissance age just seven miles east of Apache Junction.
Weekend Time Travel GetawayWho knew you could travel so far in just a weekend? Book a Phoenix vacation rental near the Arizona Renaissance Festival and take in the whole experience with a comfortable place to sleep at night. In 2012 the festival will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from February 12th to April 3rd, as well as Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 20th. The festival is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Admission to AdventureWhile you can’t trade a chicken for admission as you might have in renaissance times, it won’t break the bank to enjoy this all day affair with your family. For 2012, gate admission for adults is $22, and children ages five to 12 are $12 (children under five are free). Tickets include free parking and all entertainment shows, but rides, crafts and food are an additional cost.
Get two dollars off admission if you purchase tickets in advance at Fry’s Food Stores across Arizona, or one dollar off when you purchase online. Tickets go on sale after the first of the year.
Exciting Expectations for FunDo you think all renaissance festivals are alike? Well, think again. The Arizona Renaissance Festival has a 12 stage theater with continuous performances throughout the day, not to mention the entertainment events that occur all over the grounds. Meet royalty, join in a gypsy dance, guffaw along with the village fool, and enjoy poetry and prose with a bit of wordplay. Roll with laughter during comedy shows, watch battles of wits and swordsmanship, stare in awe at acrobats, and listen to music that will make your feet tap along. This doesn’t even scratch the surface.
Crafts of OldThere’s also a full artisan marketplace where you can watch craftsmen at work on pottery and leather, blow glass creations and carve wood sculptures. The over 200 artisans also include blacksmiths, weavers, candle makers and a variety of other talented individuals. Buy the man in your life a real sword that embodies his masculinity, and buy your little princess a beautiful halo of flowers and fairy wings. Everything you can think of, and even things you can’t, is available.
Let the Jousting Begin!Three times a day, you can see the glory of the Arizona Renaissance Festival, and a competition with a legend that withstands the passage of time. Jousting tournaments occur three times a day in the Jousting Arena, every day that the festival is open in 2012. At noon witness “A Joust for the Queen’s Favor,” followed by a tournament of champions at 2:00 PM, all leading up to “A Joust to the Death” at 5:00 PM. Between tournaments you can take a tour of the stables and meet the valiant, chivalrous knights who are ready to fight for glory and honor.
Whether you’re a history buff or you’re just looking for a fun activity everyone in the family can enjoy, the Arizona Renaissance Festival will not disappoint. Book a vacation home near Apache Junction and spend the whole weekend taking in everything the festival has to offer.
