Kihei Restaurants - Beyond the Luau
Kihei, situated on Maui’s western shore, is an area that has grown considerably over the past few years. It is home to the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, the famous Haleakala and Puu Kukui volcanoes and a great place to plan a Maui vacation for the entire family. And, to the delight of gourmets everywhere, Kihei offers visitors a vast selection of impressive restaurants that offer an almost endless array of foods to choose from.
A Five Palms high-five
Nothing feels better than spending a great night at a restaurant that caters to your every need. Share some fun and laughs with your family over a mouthwatering dish created by signature chefs. One of Kihei’s popular restaurants is the Five Palms, which has earned its reputation for a lot of reasons and has one of the best locations on the island for the views and ambience. Five Palms is tucked away and so secluded that many visitors don’t know its location. However, it’s such a terrific place to dine that letting you in on this little secret is a pleasure. The breakfasts at Five Palms are second to none and lunch and dinner don’t lag behind a bit in taste and satisfaction.
The prices are reasonable, the service is reputable and the food is exquisite. The patio faces directly towards Keawakapu Beach, which is enticing to any visitor. The inside of the restaurant is quaint and unpretentious but many people that dine here prefer to eat outside and so the inside is no concern. Although the view of the ocean and beaches is nearly gone by sunset, the simple sound of the ocean crashing against the shore and the fantastic dinner you will receive is enough to keep you here. There is also a full sushi bar, as well, for those looking for tasty, fresh treats created from fresh fish caught right off Kihei.
Sansei is a lively place
For those that are looking for a more contemporary setting and some New Wave, Asian-style dishes, then the Sansei restaurant is the place to be. Sansei has a lively atmosphere and this is what makes it a critic’s favorite. “Bon Appetit” magazine named Sansei among their favorite restaurants on the island and home of one of America’s best sushi bars.
The chefs here are well known for their creative imaginations with every dish that they serve. It’s almost like getting a dish that was especially created for your eating pleasure. Dishes like the Crusted Ahi Roll and the Kapalua Butterfly Roll are the two most requested ones on the menu. The crab, salmon and the shiromi with fresh vegetables are all served in a colorful array and are all quite flavorful. The Asian Shrimp Cake with Ginger Lime Butter and Cilantro Pesto was a first place winner for Sansei at the annual Taste of Lahaina. This dish features a delicate and flaky shrimp cake encrusted with crisp Chinese noodles.
Sansei first opened their doors in March of 1996 at Kapalua Resorts in Maui. In 2002 they opened two more restaurants in Honolulu and one in Kihei. Sansei refers to the Japanese word “third generation” and the founder of the restaurant D.K. Kodama felt that the name was befitting a restaurant that was inspired by true Japanese traditions—while still catering to the contemporary interpretations of Asian cuisine and sushi. D.K. Kodama is himself a third-generation Japanese-American restaurateur.
