Submerge Yourself in History, Culture, or Nature

Are you a history buff? Head out to Gamble Plantation, a historic antebellum mansion and former sugar plantation. Then take a trip to the 365-acre Emerson Point Preserve, home of the largest Native American temple mound in southwestern Florida. Visitors can enjoy fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and hiking at both Emerson Point and the 487-acre Robinson Nature Preserve.

Take the kids to the South Florida Museum, the largest natural/cultural museum on Florida's Gulf Coast. The Museum is also home of the Bishop Planetarium and the Parker Manatee Aquarium, which houses Snooty, the world's oldest manatee.

Art lovers can't leave without visiting the Village of the Arts, Florida's largest artists' colony. Roughly 40 artists of all different mediums call the Village home and the community is a wealth of brightly painted buildings, creative decor, and incredible art. This is a town like nothing you've ever seen before.

Relaxation and Recreation Galore

There's no shortage of recreational things to do in Bradenton, Florida. Grab a tee time at the 18-hole River Run Golf Links. Shopaholics can't miss out on Ellenton Premium Outlets, which hosts top-name outlets like Saks OFF 5th and Coach Factory.

Local Dining: From Frog Legs to Fois Gras

Bradenton is home to a wide variety of cuisines, including Cajun/low country, seafood, Cuban, Italian and beachfront hole-in-the-walls. Linger Lodge was named one of the "Top Ten Most Unusual Restaurants in the World" by Forbes Magazine, and the restaurant has well-earned a spot on that list. Every square inch of Linger Lodge is covered in preserved local animals, including fish, local birds, and full-size alligators. Don't let the dead animal decor fool you into thinking this restaurant is just a tourist trap, however; the Linger Lodge serves up delicious Southern swamp-inspired fare at reasonable prices. Try sharing the Linger Lodge's signature River Sampler Platter, which comes piled with fried green tomatoes, chicken-fried frog legs, and fried alligator tail.

On the other end of the culinary spectrum, Beach Bistro in nearby Anna Maria Island boasts the highest Zagat rating in the state of Florida. Even though the Bistro has won the Florida Golden Spoon Award eight times and caused Zagat to call Beach Bistro's fare "the best food on the Gulf Coast," the restaurant still manages to maintain a down-to-earth feel. Start with the restaurant's "One Helluva Soup" and end with "Food Heaven," a massive plate "worth dying for" that includes Maine lobster, Colorado lamb, and Hudson Valley fois gras. Can't decide on just one dish? Try the "Stroll on the Beach" tasting menu, which samples a wide selection of Beach Bistro's delectable dishes.
