Portsea Getaway Things to Do

by James Cassidy

A Beach Spot Close to Melbourne

On the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Portsea is one the best places for a real beach holiday within a two hour drive from Melbourne, Australia. In Portsea, we have our choice of beaches. On one side of the peninsula, it is blessed with beautiful ocean beaches and on the other, the bay beaches are very children-friendly. Portsea is a high-end beach town, and most everything is in walking distance. There's a lot to do here with water sports, diving, sightseeing and enjoying the beaches. Here are a few of my favorite things about Portsea.

Portsea Victoria beach holiday

Have a Beer on the Bay

The famous Portsea Hotel overlooks Port Phillip bay, and the pub, called the "beer garden," is the perfect place to relax with a beer and enjoy the view. The hotel has several restaruants and bars and is slso the perfect place for a family Sunday lunch. The surroundings are just spectacular, and the food is great. It's a perfect stopping point on the way to Point Nepean National Park and a day of hiking or horseback riding.

Great Golf

If you ever tire of the beaches and pub, you can play a round of golf at the numerous world-class golf courses all within a 10-minutes drive. My favorite is The Dunes, which has won Australian Golf Course of the Year awards too many times to remember. It's a links-style course that's challenging but not impossible, and there's a 9-hole course that's perfect for playing with beginners or your kids. No memberships are needed, just book and play. A newer course to try is Moonah Links, which is a real beauty. The Open Course was designed for the Australian Open, and the Legends Course is a bit more user-friendly. The clubhouse has a great bar and restaurant where you can celebrate your round.

Ahhh, Hot Springs

When vigorous activity loses its appeal, you can retire to the Peninsula Hot Springs for soak. The hot springs are the only ones in Victoria and heat several pools up to 50 degrees. There are public pools that are family-friendly, and a selection of private pools, day spa treatments and facilities arouns the springs. And of course, like everything in Porsea, the hot springs pools are surrounded by amazing landscapes.

I always love coming to Portsea, an amazing place for a day trip from Melbourne or a week-long beach vacation.
