and Washington, D.C
. The race takes place each October, drawing runners both for the scenic course and the fantastic fall weather. This marathon is also a great excuse to plan an extended trip to our nation's capital and get to know Washington, D.C. while attending the Marine Corps Marathon.
The 2012 Marathon
In 2012, the Marine Corps Marathon is scheduled for October 28
. The event has sold out for the last several years, making it essential for interested runners to register in advance online. Some people choose not to run in the marathon, but simply to attend and support the runners. There are also several events scheduled around the marathon, such as a Healthy Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 27
and a 10K run on Sunday, October 28
. Registration forms and details on fees are available on the official Marine Corps Marathon website.
Many runners are interested in the Marine Corps Marathon for its size and location. The course is a scenic one, starting off in Arlington, Virginia on Route 110
. There is a little bit of a climb in the beginning of the course (rewarded by a descent) before passing through Georgetown and right by the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Memorial, Potomac Park, the Jefferson Memorial, and the National Mall
. It seems fitting that the Marine Corps Marathon is filled with such patriotic scenery, including a loop around the reflecting pool in front of the U.S. Capitol building. The course finishes back in Virginia passing the Pentagon and the Arlington National Cemetery
Signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon can give athletes a goal to train for throughout the summer and early fall. The 26.2 mile course is a scenic one but must be trained for in advance. The race begins at 7:45 a.m. for wheelchair and hand cycle participants. At 8 a.m., the runners will begin. The official marathon website suggests that runners arrive two hours in advance of their start time. During this time, runners will proceed through the security checkpoint, store their belongings, and be directed to the proper corral for the beginning of the race. Timing for the marathon is calculated by a tag from ChronoTrack Timing Systems
Successfully completing the Marine Corps Marathon is a reason to celebrate. The finish festival takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on race day. Entertainment is planned both for runners and fans including food, live music, sponsor displays, and giveaways. Highlights of the finish festival include the Michelob Ultra Beer Garden
and the Michelob Ultra Stage
featuring live music from Quantico rock band
. Many fans choose to cheer on the runners from a spot along the marathon route and then join the runners in celebration afterwards at the finish festival.
An individual runner's routine is essential to a successful marathon run. The best way to make sure you are prepared for the Marine Corp Marathon is with an Arlington, VA
or Washington DC vacation rental
. A rental provides a private kitchen where you can stock the fridge with all the snacks, drinks, and meals you need to be prepared for the race. After the race, you will love having the extra space to relax and recover. If you're planning on spending some time exploring Washington, D.C., a rental can be a comfortable - home away from home during your vacation to our nation's capital.
