NJ Seafood Festival
June 8 to June 10, 2012 Belmar, NJ
Some travelers think of the Jersey Shore
as a destination just for the sultry days of July and August, but there is one very good reason to visit in June. The NJ Seafood Festival takes place each year in Belmar
in mid-June. This event brings together passionate chefs, seafood enthusiasts, artists, musicians, and more in one blowout event. If you love lobster, shrimp, and clams, or are maybe even so adventurous to try something like alligator sausage, be sure to mark your calendar with this exciting food festival.
festival will be held June 8 - 10
at Silver Lake on Ocean Avenue
The 2011 Festival
In 2011, the NJ Seafood Festival celebrated its 25th year. From June 10 to June 12, seafood fans came to Silver Lake Park on Ocean Avenue in Belmar for a family-friendly day of fun. Over 150,000 people showed up in 2011 to see what local chefs had up their sleeves when it came to preparing seafood. Set on the scenic oceanfront of Belmar
, this festival featured food from a variety of favorite local restaurants including Jack Baker's Lobster Shanty
, Klein's Waterside Cafe
, Mr. Shrimp
, and more. The festival featured traditional seafood dishes as well as more exotic offerings like seafood paella and different types of sushi.
While the vendors are the main event of the NJ Seafood Festival, there is also plenty for kids to do here. A good amount of the kids' entertainment is centered in the Children's Fun Tent
where young ones can engage in arts and crafts, and enjoy performances from storytellers and musicians. Beyond the children's tent there are also more live music performances that help add a lively spirit to the entire festival. While there is great entertainment for adults too, kids might be the ones asking to return to the seafood festival again next year.
Fun for Adults
The NJ Seafood Festival is a great event for food and wine lovers. Not only does the festival feature dishes from dozens of the area's best seafood restaurants, but over the years the festival has also expanded to include a demonstration tent and an international wine tent too. If you're interested in learning how to prepare seafood or how to pair wines with seafood, opportunities will arise for learning throughout the festival. Additional entertainment includes fine arts and crafts for sale and live music performances as well.
The NJ Seafood Festival takes place in a park that is filled with tents. While the best weather for this type of event is of course sunshine, the event (in years past) has always been a rain or shine event. This is a free festival; no tickets are required to attend. The festival is put together by the Belmar Tourism Commission
, an organization that can answer any questions from possible visitors. The hours of the festival are usually from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and there is a free Festival Trolley
that loops through Belmar to bring people to the park. Keep in mind that no pets are allowed in the park for this festival.
Vacation Rentals for the NJ Seafood Festival
The best way to plan a visit to the NJ Seafood Festival is to choose a vacation rental right on the beach. Belmar is known for its scenic waterfront and choosing an oceanfront rental will put all the pleasures of the beach right at your fingertips. While water can still be chilly for swimming in June, the beach is perfect for sunbathing, flying kites, and playing a friendly game of touch football with the family. Get the summer started with a bang this year by choosing a vacation rental in Belmar
and attending the NJ Seafood Festival.
