Things to do in Avalon with Kids

Things to do in Avalon, NJ with Kids at the Beach
Swimming, sandcastles, and sunbathing are staples of any beach vacation, and they’re all available in abundance in Avalon. But there’s more to do on the New Jersey coast than just the basics.
Kids can go surfing and boogie boarding, but be aware that surfing is only permitted on 30th Street Beach in a specified area safely away from swimmers. On Tuesday evenings beginning in June, you can head to the beach for the Big Beach Movie, a free event offering a screening of a family-friendly film. Every Saturday you can enjoy a free concert on the beach as well.
Any time you use the beach in Avalon, you will need to have beach tags. They cost $6 per day, but you can purchase a weekly pass for $12 that will save you money if you plan on going to the beach more than twice during your trip. You can get tags at the Beach Tag Booth on 30th Avenue or from the inspectors on the beach. Parking at the beach is free.
From June through August the Miss Avalon offers Dolphin Nature Cruises to see these playful creatures in their natural habitat. They time the cruises to coincide with the dolphins' active feeding times to insure the most possible sightings, and you and the kids also will learn all about the many birds of the shore and wetlands areas and see them in their natural environment.
Avalon Attractions and Activities
There are many fun things to do in Avalon, NJ with kids away from the beach as well. Pirate Island Adventure Golf is possibly the nicest mini golf course you will ever play. You can have a high seas mini golf adventure golfing across pirate ships, around sea caves, through waterfalls and more at this award-winning themed miniature golf location.
At the Wetlands Institute the kids can learn more about the ecosystems of the New Jersey shore and the efforts being made to preserve them. Exhibits include live marsh animals in the exhibit hall, a walk through a salt marsh and an observation tower. Kids can get close to sea horses, crabs, birds and much more.
If you have a rainy day to fill, stop by Island Studio Paint Your Own Pottery. The kids can choose their own item to paint, and the shop will fire it for you. Not only will you have a great time, you'll go home with a wonderful souvenir as well.
Special Treats for All Ages
When you're in the mood for a little treat to take a break from your day, pay a visit to Kohler’s Bakery. Kohler's is hugely popular, but there's an local's secret to getting what you want quickly and avoiding the long lines. Give them your order in the afternoon, and the next morning you can just pop in and pick up the bag with your name on it. Grab some sticky buns for breakfast on the way to the beach – just don’t forget the wet wipes, because the sticky buns live up to their name. It's a great place to stock up the kitchen of your Avalon beach vacation rental with fresh baked goods for your stay.
On a hot summer day, stop by Sundae Best for an ice cream. Be sure to eat all the way to the bottom of the cone; there’s a surprise waiting for you (spoiler alert for those that must know –it’s a yummy Hershey Kiss!).
