Colorado Ski Vacations

Just the mention of the word Colorado evokes images of snow-capped mountains, ski slopes, and wide open spaces. If this is the type of vacation you’ve been craving, the rumors are true; Colorado is one of the best outdoor destinations in the American West. From ski resorts to Rocky Mountain National Park to Denver, you will find fresh mountain air, a developing restaurant scene, and plenty of opportunities to indulge in outdoor adventure.

When to Visit

Similar to many destinations in the American West, Colorado vacations feature two high seasons. During the winter, ski resort vacations are especially popular between the months of December and March. Ski resorts like Breckenridge, Vail, and Winter Park attract ski enthusiasts who want to soak up the best of the season. Choosing a vacation rental with a fireplace is another way to celebrate the cold weather.

From June through August, when the snow has melted away, Colorado begins an outdoor enthusiast's paradise full of opportunities to go hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and more. While kids are out of school, many families plan trips to Colorado to take advantage of these outdoor activities.

Feelings can be mixed about the seasons in between. Both early fall and late spring have their positive qualities, including almost-perfect weather without the crowds. However, during early spring, hiking trails can still be quite muddy and not ideal for all those outdoor activities you’ve been dreaming of.

What to Expect

Travelers can expect to be amazed time and time again during a trip to Colorado. Take the ski resorts, for example. Not only do they offer a great backdrop for skiing and snowboarding, but they are also incredibly beautiful. Snow-covered pine trees are the perfect scenery for a wintry getaway. Colorado ski resorts also offer challenging slopes that are appealing to the experienced skier. Choose between Vail, Steamboat, Breckenridge, Aspen, and other popular ski resorts for your winter getaway.

A summer trip will be a completely different experience in Colorado. One popular destination is a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park where visitors can explore the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. Here activities include over 300 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Visitors are sure to encounter a range of wildlife too including elk, bighorn sheep, eagles, and more.

If you’re looking to explore the urban side of Colorado, head over to Denver. The Mile High City has plenty to offer in entertainment including a zoo, art museum, and science museum. With great theater, dining, and cocktail bars, there will never be a dull moment on vacation in Denver. You can easily plan daytrips from Denver too to explore nearby historic mining towns, outdoor recreation, and 24-hour casinos.

Must Bring

A trip to Colorado will be all about simple pleasures, so you’ll want comfortable clothing to complement that type of atmosphere. Pack durable clothes for hiking and biking, and a pair of shoes with sturdy soles. Remember that elevation can have a striking effect on temperature, so even in the summer, you will want to bring layers of clothes and a waterproof jacket.

Even the trendy restaurants of Denver aren’t too fancy, so bring a few outfits for nights on the town but leave your dressy clothes at home. If you’re planning a trip with kids, be sure to bring along some entertainment for the vacation rental, including favorite DVDs and board games. If you’re planning a romantic trip, why not bring along some bubble bath or a favorite bottle of wine?

Getting There

Many travelers are drawn to Colorado for its accessible location. Visitors from outside the state often arrive via air. If you’re planning a trip to the Mile High City, you can fly directly to Denver, the largest airport in the state. There are also a number of other smaller airports including Colorado Springs, Eagle-Vail, Aspen, and Telluride.

If you’re planning a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, you will want to fly to DIA and take the scenic drive northwest from Denver. To reach ski resorts like Steamboat Springs, you can also drive north from Denver Airport. Many travelers choose to rent a car, but there are also convenient shuttles if you don’t want to drive on the roads with icy conditions.

What to Know About Vacation Rentals in Colorado

A trip to Colorado will be full of fresh air and soaking up the best of the great outdoors. The last thing you will want to do after an exhilarating day of hiking or skiing will be returning to a cramped hotel room. Having a vacation rental will add a whole new level to your vacation. Here you can get cozy by a roaring fire in the evenings or start your day with a family breakfast thanks to the convenience of your private kitchen.

The landscape of Colorado is meant to be admired. When you have private outdoor space, you can enjoy your morning coffee while looking out at the snow-covered peaks. Most importantly, a vacation rental sets the stage for you to really relax. When everyone in your family has their own sleeping spaces and people can take the vacation at their own pace, you will be setting the stage for a memorable Colorado adventure.
