Running with the Angels
Los Angeles Marathon
March 18, 2012
Los Angeles, CA
The annual Los Angeles Marathon is the perfect race for talented athletes as well as beginners. As if running 26.2 miles from LA to Santa Monica doesn’t already make you feel great, this event gives you the chance to run for a charity of your choice, with 70 different options. If you aren’t up to running 26 miles, this marathon is walker-friendly and also hosts a 5k walk through Elysian Park.
The next Los Angeles Marathon is Sunday, March 18, 2012 and registration begins August 1, 2011. The registration fee is $145 and the race is open to any and all participants. Keep in mind, however, that every mile reopens to traffic every 15 minutes and the race ends eight hours after commencement. If you are on the course when that street reopens, you will be asked to move to the sidewalk and obey all traffic signals.
There are several divisions for entrants, each having their own start and finish time. Wheelchair participants will begin the race at 6:55 AM, hand cycles will start at 7:00 AM, and all other participants will commence at 7:24 AM.
You can compete for a prize or simply run for fun, but every individual that completes the race in eight hours will receive a participation medal. Prize money is available for the fastest runners.
You can register online on the Los Angeles Marathon website or by mailing in your registration. Your cost of registration will include the following items:
- Water and medical assistance throughout the course
- Personal item storage
- Two day Health and Fitness Expo event
- Participation t-shirt
- Personalized bib if you register before January 15, 2012
- Shuttle transportation to and from the event

Hitting the Course
One of the best parts of this fun marathon is the course itself. Runners begin their marathon at the world-famous Dodger Stadium and run through LA down to the beach at the Santa Monica Pier. From city sites to crashing waves, runners enjoy the best Los Angeles has to offer. The course is available to hand cranks and wheelchairs as well. Start times stagger and those who have completed a marathon in 3, 4 or 5 hours can choose seeding in an élite group. The route is fully staffed with support stations, 6,000 volunteers, and a drop out van for emergencies. It does vary slightly from year to year.
Refuel and See The Sights
When planning your trip to the LA marathon, remember that LA is famous for food. In fact, the race itself sponsors a special 'carb loading' dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood. It offers participants the perfect opportunity to see the famous Hollywood sign, the Kodak Theater, and the Freeman House. Also nearby is the excitement of the Santa Monica Pier, the fun of Universal Studios, and the wildlife of the Los Angeles Zoo.
The Los Angeles Marathon is so much more than a simple race. Book an LA vacation rental home for the week and take in everything the City of Angels has to offer.
