Play, Stay, and Run in Carlsbad
While the course itself is gorgeous, Carlsbad itself outshines it. Edged by miles of stunning beaches, shopping, dinning, and other attractions, it is a favorite vacation spot – even for those who don't run. For those that do, what could be better than a day at the AvaJade Salon and Day Spa for a massage and mineral bath to ease those tired muscles? Tour LEGOLAND California or the SEA LIFE Aquarium and stop off at one of the popular restaurants in the area like Armenian Cafe or the Bellefleur Restaurant. Cap the day off with a night-cap at your vacation rental home and you'll be ready to visit the shopping district in the morning.
Born to Run
For those interested in the Carlsbad Marathon, there are just a few things to know. This year's event is the weekend of January 19, with the race itself starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, January 19. The race is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon and support stations at each mile marker (about) ensure safety. At the end of the race, organizers present awards for each major age group. There is a six-hour time limit for the race. For those not up to a full marathon, a half-marathon is available as well. The fee for the full marathon is $90.00. Those who opt to run the half-marathon can register for $70.00.
More Than a Marathon
Throughout the weekend, there are a variety of activities available. Kids will enjoy the Kids Marathon Mile at LEGOLAND, while adults will appreciate the weekend long Health and Lifestyle Expo. The Carlsbad Marathon can also be run for charity, with each mile helping you support your favorite one.
Best Places to 'Carbo Load' Before the Marathon
Every good long distance runner knows the benefits of downing a huge plate of pasta or pancakes before a good race, but when runners take on a marathon in a new city, great food options may not be so easy to locate.
Here are a few of our favorite pre-race eateries that are perfect for any Prefontaine wannabes:
Founded by a pair of East Coast transplants who had a taste for Italian cuisine, Gregorio's has been a favorite Italian eatery in the community for more than two decades. The restaurant is now owned by a family who were regular customers of the eatery during its first years, and the staff pride itself on providing a comfortable, family-like dining experience. You couldn't buy better pre-race ambiance if you wanted to!
Healthy entrees abound at Gregorio's. Wheat penne pasta with Gregorio's in-house made sauce is a simple, complex carb meal that's sure to keep you going during the race, while the linguini with olive oil, garlic, fresh basil and plum tomatoes provides plenty of energy with a dose of lutein and antioxidants.
The eatery is located a few blocks from the beach along Carlsbad Village Drive, between the cross streets of Carlsbad Boulevard and Washington Street.
Spirito's Italian Restaurant
Let's face it - you're a runner, you get places (or at least can get places) pretty darn fast. For dinner, you might be looking for something quick, simple and of course, speedy! Your best option? Spirito's. Since Spirito's has served up hot plates of spaghetti, lasagna and delectable garlic bread since 1928, you may want to slow down while savoring these delectable Italian favorites.
Spirito's is located just out of downtown near the Carlsbad Plaza Shopping Center, and can be reached via El Camino Real.
Daily News Cafe
Serving mouthwatering breakfast all day everyday, the Daily News Cafe is perfect if you prefer a short or tall stack of hotcakes before a race. The eatery has been whipping up some of Carlsbad's finest buttermilk pancakes since 1990, so don't be surprised if you ask for a few more fluffy ones after your first order - cooks here are true breakfast experts! The Daily News is open from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, so be sure to get in before closing if you want to eat the night before.
Located at the corner of Carlsbad Boulevard, the Daily News Cafe is a quick eight blocks from the Carlsbad Village Drive exit from Interstate 5.
Whether you are planning a trip to San Diego to run the race or just want to enjoy a fun packed weekend, there is plenty of to do. Reserve a Carlsbad vacation rental home near the heart of the action and be ready for fun running!
