As the capital of Rio Grande do Sul and a booming metropolis of more than 1.5 million residents, Porto Alegre was a shoe-in for becoming one of the host cities for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Porto Alegre has experienced tremendous growth in recent decades, and offers plenty to first-time travelers to Brazil.

The city lies at the point of five rivers, which creates a giant freshwater lagoon Lagoa dos Patos. Porto Alegre served as a Portuguese stronghold against the Spanish Empire since 1755. Porto Alegre boasts an eclectic vibe with southern European and North American influences, as well as an impressive collection of Neoclassical architecture.

If you aren't visiting here during the World Cup, there are several other events that are worth making a trip to Porto Alegre for. Two of the most popular are the Festa Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, which features the port's fishing heritage, and the Semana Farroupilha, a week-long celebration full of local folk dancing and singing.

For the five World Cup matches that are slated in Porto Alegre for the 2014 World Cup, the impressive Estadio Beira-Rio is playing host. Nicknamed "Gigante do Beiro-Rio," or the Giant of Beiro-Rio, this venue holds more than 50,000 spectators and features a streamlined modernist design, a metal roof and revamped turnstile areas.
