Role: Distributed Services Intern

Our interns participate in all aspects of our engineering process and deploy working software to production. This includes everything from gathering requirements to designing solutions and even supporting deployments. You will work along side of a highly experienced team of engineers from various academic and industry backgrounds.

Some Intern project examples are: The HomeAway Facebook Application, Search Type-Ahead Completion, designing and building a generic service monitoring and maintenance application, HomeAway Mobile, and HomeAway Mash-ups.

Requirements:

• Currently pursuing a BS, or MS in computer science or a related technical field.
• Excellent software development skills (Java, C++).
• Organized problem solving skills.
• Experience with web application development.
• Knowledge of UNIX/Linux/OS X or Windows environments.
• Knowledge of Java, XML, JSP, and databases a plus.

Description:

This project involves creation of an automated testing mechanism for cross-site verification purposes. Project will require understanding of business logic behind process, database querying and automation of IE/Firefox to verify business process and data generated. Project requires adherence to standards of code documentation and project exit documentation. Project requires interfacing with development and qa resources.

Responsibilities:

• Complete project according to specifications.
• Provide project documentation.
• Provide accurate time estimates/tracking.
• Provide reporting on daily activities.
• Perform additional manual testing as directed.
• Follows established practices in applying quality standards for Homeaway's products.

Required skills:

• Demonstrated ability to appropriately use e-mail, IM, diagrams and other vehicles to facilitate productive communication
• Knowledge/experience with Windows operating systems/environments
• Experience working with various Internet Browsers (i.e. IE, Firefox, Safari, etc)
• Experience with other applications (Office products, etc.)

Description:

HomeAway's search engine optimization (SEO) team is in a key position to increase organic traffic from search engines and other referring sites. The SEO team supports the Product and Marketing departments to ensure their initiatives are search engine friendly. The SEO intern will learn and apply the fundamentals of search engine optimization on a dynamic website with thousands of pages.

Responsibilities

• The intern will be responsible for several facets of on-page optimization on HomeAway.com
• The intern will be responsible for conducting keyword research to support on-page optimization efforts
• The intern will identify websites or blogs with which it would be appropriate to build relationships
• The intern may be asked to communicate with site owners or bloggers via phone or email
• The intern may be asked to diagnose an SEO issue and recommend a course of action
