will be just minutes from a number of gorgeous Kohala Coast beaches, including Spencer Beach, A Bay, Hapuna Beach, Mauna Kea Beach, and more. Beach activities for vacationers who stay in include swimming, surfing, snorkeling, diving, sailing, windsurfing, parasailing, and whale watching excursions.

Families staying in will enjoy Spencer Beach County Park, which offers safe swimming, great snorkeling, and lifeguards. Facilities at Spencer Beach include restrooms, showers, picnic areas, tennis courts, and basketball and volleyball courts. Spencer Beach is located just south of Kawaihae Harbor off Highway 270.

For fantastic swimming, snorkeling, diving, and windsurfing, head to A Bay (more formally called Anaeho'omalu Bay) near the entrance to the Waikoloa Beach Resort. This lovely park boasts a white sand beach, freshwater springs, a picnic area, showers, and plenty of shade.

About seven miles north of A Bay is the Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, a wide, golden sand beach that is often ranked as one of the top beaches in Hawaii. The picturesque cove at Hapuna Beach offers safe swimming and snorkeling when the water is calm, but the area has dangerous riptides in the wintertime. This is also a good spot for shore fishing and body surfing. Amenities include lifeguards, picnic tables, pavilions, and restrooms. The beach is located about two and a half miles south of Kawaihae on Highway 19 (the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway).

Another of Hawaii's top beaches is crescent-shaped Mauna Kea Beach (Kauna'oa Beach). When the water is calm, will find excellent swimming and snorkeling inside the protective reef. This area also offers good surfing when the surf's up. Arrive very early to get a parking spot, or park at Hapuna Beach and walk a little less than a mile to Mauna Kea.
