Outer Banks Fishing
The fishing in the Outer Banks is some of the best in the country. Throughout the year, guests ofOuter Banks fishing for bluefin tuna and sea bass is best in the wintertime while summer is prime time for dolphin, white and blue marlin, sailfish, snapper, and mackerel. Other popular catches in the Outer Banks include trout, wahoo, striped bass, oysters, bay scallops, and crabs.
Buxton is the Outer Banks surf fishing capital. Situated on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Buxton is home to the prestigious Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament, which is held in early November.
Licenses are required for freshwater fishing in the Outer Banks, and can be obtained from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (888-248-6834). Starting in 2007, saltwater fishing licenses are required for Outer Banks fishing; contact the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries at 252-726-7021 or 800-682-2632 within North Carolina.
