Weddings in the mountains of North Carolina can be either a religious ceremony conducted by a clergy member or a civil ceremony conducted by a local magistrate who charges a fee of $20. Historic churches and wedding chapels in the North Carolina mountains are popular locations for wedding ceremonies, but many couples choose to say their vows in the great outdoors with the gorgeous mountains as a backdrop.
A North Carolina marriage license is required for a wedding in the North Carolina mountains. Both the bride and groom must apply for the marriage license in person at the County Register of Deeds office and show photo identification and proof of social security number. The parties must be at least 18 years of age or provide parental consent. A certified birth certificate may be required for persons under 21 years of age. If either party has been divorced or widowed in the past 60 days, a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate may be required. The fee for a North Carolina marriage license is $50 cash and the license is valid for 60 days. Blood tests are not required and there is no waiting period for the issuance of a license. Most County Register of Deeds offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays; be sure to arrive no later than 4:00 p.m.
