Water Sports for Guests of Mammoth Lakes Vacation Rentals

Mammoth Lakes and Mono County are an angler's paradise with numerous stocked lakes, rivers, and streams surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. Vacationers renting a Mammoth Lakes condo can participate in a number of fishing derbies, including the Convict Lake Spring Trout Derby, the Million Dollar Troutstock, the Children's Fishing Festival, the Western Outdoor News Double Haul, and the Convict Lake Fall Trout Derby.

Mammoth Lakes fishing season opens the last Saturday of April and runs through November 15. Fishing licenses are required for anglers 16 and older and can be purchased locally. An annual non-resident sport fishing license costs $37.30. A one-day license is $12.10 and a two-day license is $18.65. For information on fishing licenses and regulations, call the Department of Fish and Game at 760-934-2664.

Vacationers staying in Mammoth Lakes condominium rentals will find great fishing for rainbow, brown, and brook trout in Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake George, and Lake Mamie. Trophy-size Alpers rainbow trout are a favorite catch in these lakes, which are located above the town of Mammoth Lakes. All four lakes offer fishing boat rentals and some also offer pontoon boats, canoes, bait and tackle shops, and showers. Mammoth Creek, which runs east from the Old Mammoth meadow area to below Highway 395, also offers excellent fishing for rainbow and brown trout.

Convict Lake, situated about seven miles south of Mammoth Lakes, is another fine trout fishing spot for travelers staying in a Mammoth Lakes vacation rental. Facilities include boat rentals, showers, a general store, and an excellent restaurant. Other popular fishing spots include Crowley Lake, about 12 miles south of town, Long Lake, Rock Creek, and Rock Creek Lake. Tackle, pole rentals, fishing licenses, and food are available at the general store in Rock Creek.

Mammoth Lakes accommodations are also located near the June Lake Loop, where June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Grant Lake are stocked with trophy-sized Alpers trout. Amenities include five marinas, boat and tube rentals, and tackle shops. For great fly fishing, try the San Joaquin River or Rush Creek.

The numerous lakes and streams in the Mammoth Lakes area are also perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Visitors staying in a Mammoth Mountain vacation rental can rent water craft at local marinas or enjoy a guided tour with an experienced guide. Outfitters include Caldera Kayaks (760-934-1691), Pokonobe Resort (760-934-2437), Twin Lakes Store (760-934-7295), Lake Mary Marina (760-934-5353), Crowley Lake Fish Dock, (760-935-4301), and the Mono Lake Foundation (760-647-6595).
