can view a variety of colorful marine life while snorkeling and diving in the clear waters along the Kona Coast.

With calm, shallow water protected by a breakwater, Kahalu'u Beach Park is an excellent spot for snorkeling. Underground freshwater springs near the shore make the water cool and cloudy, but the water is much warmer and clearer as you swim out about 100 feet. Check out the warm tidal pool in front of the Keauhou Beach Resort. Amenities include lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and beach equipment rental.

In the summertime, visitors staying in will find good snorkeling, swimming, and bodysurfing at La'aloa Beach Park (also known as Disappearing Sands, Magic Sands, or White Sand Beach). Each winter the sandy beach is washed out to sea, but this is a good vantage point for whale watching from November to March. Amenities include restrooms, showers, and drinking water.

Kekaha Kai (Kona Coast) State Park, a few miles north of the Kona airport, offers several great beaches. The beautiful crescent-shaped beach at Mahai'ula Beach has good swimming, picnic facilities, and portable toilets. Just before the parking area, take the path to the right for the five to ten minute walk to Mahai'ula Beach. Kua Bay is a 15 to 20 minute walk, well worth the effort to enjoy the gently sloping, white sand beach and crystal clear water. The swimming is excellent at Kua Bay when the surf is calm. Kekaha Kai State Park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily except Wednesday.

Other popular beaches near include the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, a good spot for shore fishing, boogie boarding, tidepooling, and children's activities; Paheohoe Beach County Park, a nice grassy spot for a picnic; and Kamakahonu Beach, which has safe swimming near the Kailua Pier.
