The beach "disappears" during the winter, as the sand washes out to sea, but it's still a good spot to view migrating humpback whales. Facilities include drinking water, showers, and restrooms. Just to the north is a popular surfing spot called the Banyans.

Nearby Paheohoe Beach County Park is a nice spot for a picnic with its grassy lawn, palm trees, and walkways, but the rocky shore is not good for swimming.

Kahalu'u Beach Park, on Kahalu'u Bay, is a traditional fishing area for local residents. Vacationers who rent a will find excellent swimming and snorkeling in the protected waters of the bay along with a wide variety of colorful marine life. The offshore reef creates good surfing conditions, but there are dangerous rip currents just outside the bay. Amenities include restrooms, showers, picnic tables, lifeguards, and a basketball court.

In downtown Kailua Kona, Kamakahonu Beach is situated next to the Kailua Kona Pier. Ocean swimming is excellent in the calm water here. Restrooms and telephones are available, and guests of can also rent kayaks and snorkeling equipment.

are convenient to the fabulous beaches at Kona Coast (Kekaha Kai) State Park, situated two miles north of the airport on Highway 19. The park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily except Wednesday. Mahai'ula Beach is accessed by a five to ten minute walk down the path that is located on the right side just before the parking area. This lovely 200-yard crescent of tawny sand features shade trees, good swimming, a picnic area, and portable toilets. It's about a 15 to 20 minute walk to Kua Bay, a hidden gem featuring gently sloping, fine white sand, and clear water. Kua Bay offers great swimming when the surf is calm, and the boogie boarding is very good during moderate surf.

Another gorgeous Kailua Kona beach is Makalawena, which is about a 20 minute walk from Kona Coast State Park. This un-crowded beach offers fine white sand and good body surfing in the winter.

At Wawaloli Beach, guests of will find a large sandy beach with good swimming, restrooms, showers, volleyball courts, and picnic tables. To reach the beach, turn on the road to the Natural Energy Lab (NELHA), near mile marker 95, and park where the road turns to the right. Nearby is a four-wheel-drive road leading to Pine Trees, a popular surfing area.

On the southernmost tip of the island is the unusual Green Sand Beach (Mahana Beach), made of green olivine mixed with black sand. The beach is a two-mile walk from the Kaulana Boat Launch. There are no facilities here, and swimming can be dangerous.

Beaches for Guests of Kailua Kona Condo Rentals

Kailua Kona, Hawaii beaches tend to be smaller than those on the Kohala Coast just to the north, but the abundant marine life makes for great snorkeling.

The Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, situated off the Kaukini Highway (Highway 11) just north of downtown Kailua Kona, has a rocky shoreline and sandy tidal pools. This beach is a good spot for shore fishing, boogie boarding, and tidepooling. Facilities include restrooms, showers, picnic areas, athletic fields, and a children's playground. There's plenty of parking along the old runway, and you can also walk, jog, bicycle, or in-line skate on the runway. The park gate closes at 8:00 p.m. each evening.

One of the more interesting Kailua Kona beaches is White Sand Beach County Park, also known as Disappearing Sands, Magic Sands, or La'aloa Beach. Guests of
