Florida Keys Diving and Snorkeling

With North America's only living-coral barrier reef situated four to seven miles offshore, Florida Keys snorkeling and diving are popular activities for vacationers. This amazing reef extends from Key Largo to the Dry Totugas. Just below the surface is a wonderland of colorful coral, fish and other marine life just waiting to be explored.

One of the most popular spots for Florida Keys snorkeling and diving is the spectacular John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park, accessed at Mile Marker 102.5 just south of Key Largo. The park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until sunset; park buildings including the Concession Building and Visitor Center are open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Attractions include a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, natural history exhibits, nature trails, and swimming areas, but the reef is always the most popular sight.

A diving concession is located in the park and several independent dive shops from Key Largo to Tavernier also offer diving trips within the park. Dive certification is available, and experienced divers can take a fascinating night dive. Guests of Florida Keys lodging can also rent a boat to explore the reef on their own.

Snorkeling tours within the park run about $29 for adults and diving trips start at about $50. If you don't dive or snorkel, a glass-bottom boat ride (about $22 for adults) is a great way to see the reef and its inhabitants.

Popular Florida Keys diving and snorkeling areas within the park include French Reef, known for its caves and canyons; White Bank Dry Rocks, a great spot for snorkelers and novice divers; and Molasses, the largest and most varied reef formation. The famous "Christ of the Deep" statue stands in 20 feet of water at Key Largo Dry Rocks.

Florida Keys diving operators are also located in Key West and other areas of the Keys, and visitors can snorkel right off the beach at the Long Key State Recreation Area at Mile Marker 67.5. Boat rentals in the Florida Keys are a great way to explore the many small islands and hidden coves of the Keys and enjoy some great fishing. A number of local outfitters offer Florida Keys boat rentals as well as fishing and diving charters, equipment, and instruction.
