With its location along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico in Florida's Panhandle, Destin is prone to cooler temperatures compared to the tropical, southern parts of the state. The most obvious difference is during the winter months when the highs are typically in the low to mid-60s and the lows can reach all the way down into the upper 30s. The winter until the spring, where the weather is comfortably in the 70s throughout the day, is considered the dry season and is the ideal time for a vacation getaway if you prefer dry, cool air and a refreshing breeze off the water. When the summer and fall months roll around, typically from May through October, the rainy season arrives and humidity begins to hang in the air. While thunderstorms are a common occurrence in the late afternoon, they usually dissipate quickly and leave behind a trail of sunshine and steamy temperatures. With average rainy season highs in the mid-80s to lower 90s (although the record temperature is well above a hundred at 107) and Gulf temperatures in the high 70s to mid 80s, a relaxing day at a white sandy beach can usually be found before rain begins to cloud the skies. The hurricane season begins in June and runs until the end of November and while the warm southern winds will occasionally bring in a tropical storm or hurricane, this is less common on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida compared to the Atlantic side. However, always be sure to check weather reports before leaving on a Destin vacation during the hurricane season.
