Destin, Florida
Destin, Florida, located in the Panhandle area, has a history rich with memories of Native Americans, Spanish explorers, and industrious businessmen. Destin traces its immediate history to a fisherman, Captain Leonard Destin, who moved here from New London, Connecticut, and settled in Northwest Florida in about 1845. Captain Destin pioneered the fishing industry, and Destin has maintained this heritage to the present.Known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" due to the number of trophy fish caught off its shores, Destin has the largest charter-boat fleet in Florida. Cobia, blackfin tuna, king mackerel, bluefish, barracuda and Spanish mackerel are all found in these emerald waters. Anglers compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in various tournaments throughout the year. Prices for the charters may vary by boat, and include bait and tackle. Meals can also be arranged with the boat captain.
Destin, like much of the Panhandle, has beaches composed of silky smooth white sand that came from the wearing down of the Appalachian Mountains. The beaches of Destin have been acclaimed as the "Best in the South" and one of the top three "Favorite Family Vacation Destinations" by the readers of Southern Living. The most popular public beaches are Henderson Beach State Park off of Highway 98 on the east side of Destin and James Lee Park on Old Highway 98.
Destin also plays host to many other recreational opportunities. Dive or snorkel on the natural reefs, wrecks, and barges in Destin's clear green waters. Acres of links will satisfy the golfer in your family, and water sports, sailing, tennis and hiking are just a few of the outdoor recreational activities available.
Fort Walton Beach, just across from Destin over the Miracle Strip Parkway, also has pristine beaches. It is the home to Elgin Air Force Base, the U.S. Air Force's Armament Museum, and the 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing-the "Top Guns" of Desert Storm. The museum displays aircraft stretching back to WWII. Fighter planes, bombers, reconnaissance, and spy planes like the SR-71 Blackbird are represented.
If you want a daytrip, head west to the historic town of Pensacola, home of the Blue Angels flight squadron. Or head east to the more lively Panama City Beach, home of Spring Breakers and all sorts of frivolity!
Destin is a great place for a Florida vacation. The whole family can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and outdoor activity. So if Florida is your destination, make Destin part of the itinerary!
