Destin is surrounded by water on three sides, with Choctawhatchee Bay to the north, the Gulf of Mexico to the South, and East Pass, which connects the Gulf and the Bay, to the east. Two sandbars are situated about 15 yards and 130 yards offshore, and the waters are usually calm and great for swimming.

One of the most popular Destin beaches is at James Lee County Park, situated on Old U.S. 98 near the Walton/Okaloosa County Line. This park is popular with families and offers shallow water, nine dune crossovers, restrooms, showers, a playground, concessions, free parking, and three picnic pavilions.

Henderson Beach State Park, off Highway 98 just east of Destin, is another great Destin beach choice. This 250-acre park features 6,000 feet of gorgeous beachfront along the emerald waters of the Gulf and is perfect for an afternoon of swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. Amenities include a boardwalk, restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic pavilions, grills, and a nature trail. The Okaloosa Day Use Area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore is located on U.S. 98 east of Fort Walton Beach. Guests of will find calm water here along with sugar white sand beaches, picnic tables, a boat launch, parking, and public restrooms with outdoor showers. Dolphins can be seen offshore. The park is open from 8:00 a.m. to sunset and admittance is free.

Other popular Destin, Florida beaches include Elgin Air Force Beach on the west side of Destin Bridge, located off U.S. 98 on Okaloosa Island; John Beasley Wayside Park and Brackin Wayside Park and Boardwalk, both on U.S. 98 on Okaloosa Island; and Newman C. Brackin Wayside Park, situated next to the fishing pier on Okaloosa Island.

South of Destin, in the group of communities known as The Beaches of South Walton, is a number of other gorgeous beaches. Grayson Beach State Park, situated south of U.S. 98 about halfway between Destin and Panama City Beach, is perfect for sunbathing, swimming and surf fishing. Other attractions include four miles of hiking trail along with canoeing or kayaking on lovely Western Lake. The park is open from 8:00 a.m. to sunset and the entrance fee is $4 per vehicle.
